Let’s Change BAD News for the World Day of Social Justice
‘Social Justice’ are words thrown into news, speeches, articles but can we make it come true?’ asks Susanne Gervay OAM. ‘Let’s Act for the World Day of Social Justice for our children.’ Be a volunteer, donate, join the Variety car rally, read books to kids, be a writing tutor for kids at Story Factory, walk for a children’s charity like ‘Walk Me Home’ to support sick kids and the many other charities working for social justice.
World Day of Social Justice is celebrated annually on 20 February. It is dedicated to promoting equality, justice and eliminating social inequalities around the world. Fight against poverty. Support of gender equality. Fair distribution of resources with education, health care and jobs. Elimination of discrimination. Charities for youth include:-
Room to Read is a global non-profit organisation working to transform the lives of millions of children throughout Asia and Africa improving literacy and gender equality in education.
Books in Homes is a charitable foundation that provides books-of-choice to indigenous children and those living in remote, disadvantaged, and low socio-economic circumstances, ensuring crucial early literacy engagement and the development of reading skills needed for lifelong achievement. It helps to overcome generational poverty by enhancing the chances of success in early education thereby opening options, choices, and potential in later life. Since 2001, Books in Homes has distributed over 3.1 million new books to children through schools and communities around Australia.
Monkey Baa Theatre is a national theatre company that creates extraordinary theatre for you audiences for ages 3 -13years. Monkey Baa believes young people gain so much from experiencing live theatre. It nurtures empathy, sparks creativity and gives young people the confidence to explore their emotions.
Australia Reads is a national not-for-profit initiative dedicated to promoting reading for pleasure and improving reading habits across Australia. Australia Reads is a collaborative project between many Australian organisations aimed at lifting literacy rates and improving reading participation.
Susanne Gervay is a Writer Ambassador for Room to Read; Role Model and committee member of Books in Homes; Patron of Monkey Baa Theatre; donates readings at libraries and participates in many literacy programs. There are many not-for-profit charities that seek your support from Variety the Children’s Charity, Story Factory in Sydney and online, Indigenous Literacy Foundation to UCAP (Ukraine Children’s Action Project) with core projects to help Ukrainians children. Your help is valued. What can you do?
Susanne Gervay was asked to write a picture book for Variety the Children’s Charity to give children who face adversity hope with the joy of reading. ‘Gracie and Josh’ proudly carries the endorsement of Variety.
Before Susanne Gervay’s recent surgery, she opened a GoFund Account for Ukraine and raised $15,500 from her friends and writers for children and families.
The Lifetime Social Justice Literature was awarded to Susanne Gervay. ‘A one-time recognition award to Australian author Susanne Gervay for her body of work, through both picture books and Young Adult novels, with the focus on Social Justice issues’, presented by The International Literacy Association.
