South Coast patients gain local access to hip resurfacing surgery

Ramsay Health Care 2 mins read
Key Facts:
  • Hip resurfacing surgery is now available at Nowra Private Hospital on the NSW South Coast
  • The bone-preserving procedure involves reshaping and capping the existing femoral head rather than removing it
  • The local availability means South Coast patients no longer need to travel outside the region for this specialised treatment

Patients on the NSW South Coast can now access hip resurfacing surgery locally, following the successful introduction of the procedure at Nowra Private Hospital, operated by Ramsay Health Care.

The surgery was performed by orthopaedic surgeon Dr Paul Thornton-Bott and expands the range of orthopaedic treatment options available in the region. Hip resurfacing is a specialised bone-preserving alternative to total hip replacement and may be suitable for selected patients, depending on individual clinical assessment.

Unlike traditional hip replacement, which removes the femoral head and neck, (the ball of the ball-and-socket hip joint), hip resurfacing involves reshaping and capping the existing head and resurfacing the socket. This approach is designed to preserve more of the patient’s natural anatomy, providing increased stability and improved mobility and function following surgery.

Dr Thornton-Bott has more than 20 years’ experience in hip and knee joint replacement, hip resurfacing and trauma surgery. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons (UK) and applies evidence-based techniques focused on safe surgery, early mobilisation and recovery.

“Hip resurfacing can be an excellent option for more active patients, as it preserves bone and supports more natural movement of the hip joint, allowing them to comfortably run and participate in sports, even at a high level,” Dr Thornton-Bott said.

“The introduction of a new, ceramic hip resurfacing means we can now offer this technology to all active patients, irrespective of sex or size.”

“Being able to offer this procedure locally means patients can access this specialised orthopaedic care closer to home, while maintaining high clinical standards.”

The introduction of hip resurfacing surgery reflects Nowra Private Hospital’s ongoing investment in clinical capability and its focus on providing reliable, high-quality care for South Coast communities.

Nowra Private Hospital CEO Simon McDermott said expanding local services supports better access and continuity of care.

“Providing more advanced orthopaedic options locally means patients don’t need to travel outside the region for specialised treatment. This strengthens access to safe, high-quality care and supports patients through their recovery closer to family and community,” Mr McDermott said.

“Women’s health is not a pilot project”: RACGP on Government decision to prioritise political donations over safety

The Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) is concerned for patients after the Federal Government ignored expert advice from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) by allowing pharmacists to prescribe the oral contraceptive pill. RACGP Vice President Dr Ramya Raman said the “lobbyist-led” decision represents a serious failure of health policy that puts women’s health and safety at risk. “Women’s health is not a pilot project. This decision puts politics ahead of patient safety and sends a troubling message to Australian women that expert medical advice can be ignored,” she said. Dr Raman said the decision was particularly disappointing given the…
