Journalists who have reported on violence against women in the last year are strongly encouraged to submit entries for the Walkley Foundation's Our Watch Award for Excellence in Reporting on Violence Against Women as part of the Walkley Foundation’s Mid-Year Celebration of Journalism.
The category is sponsored by Our Watch, Australia’s leading organisation for the primary prevention of violence against women, and administered by the Walkley Foundation. It recognises the importance of accurate and sensitive reporting in raising awareness of the drivers of the crisis in gendered violence.
The ABC News Breakfast team won the 2025 award for 'Not Just A Number', their in-depth special coverage of gendered violence against women. The judges said the standout entry “moved beyond reactive reporting to deliver sustained, respectful coverage of Australia’s gendered violence crisis. As well as demonstrating wide reach and remarkable public benefit, it centred diverse voices and consistently included resources for victim-survivors. It also powerfully highlighted expert views on gendered drivers of violence and solutions.”
The Our Watch Award is open to an individual, team or news organisation whose work has highlighted the drivers of gendered violence and the way these intersect with other forms of discrimination and abuse faced by women and children.
Stories published between 15 April 2025, and 13 April 2026 are eligible, with a submission deadline of 13 April 2026. For more information and to apply: Our Watch Award
