Great Barrier Reef Orchestra celebrates international honour for its Artistic Director and looks to 2026 premiere piece with William Barton

It has been a landmark year for the Great Barrier Reef Orchestra, with the internationally respected arts publication Musical America naming Artistic Director Theodore Kuchar among its Top 30 Professionals of the Year for 2025, a prestigious global recognition that places the Orchestra firmly on the international stage. Each year, Musical America recognises 30 outstanding artists and arts leaders shaping the future of music worldwide. The inclusion of Theodore Kuchar in the 2025 list reflects not only his distinguished international career but also the artistic standards and vision he has brought to the Great Barrier Reef Orchestra. Under his leadership, the Orchestra has strengthened its reputation for delivering performances of exceptional quality while championing the cultural vitality of North Queensland.

President of the GBRO, Dene Olding said, “To be named as a Top Professional by Musical America is a remarkable achievement and reflects the vast experience, drive, energy and entrepreneurial flair of Theodore Kuchar. We are most fortunate to have him in Townsville to bring these considerable skills to the orchestra”.

The honour comes in the same year the Orchestra celebrates 25 years since its inception, marking a significant milestone in its evolution from an ambitious regional ensemble to a permanent and much-loved fixture of Townsville’s cultural life, and a leading Australian music maker. In November, the Townsville City Council hosted a special function to acknowledge the Orchestra’s 25-year contribution to the city, a fitting tribute given Council’s longstanding support and commitment to ensuring the organisation’s longevity.

The Orchestra also receives valued support from the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland, private donors and the wider community. Together, this network of backing has allowed the GBRO to flourish as both a professional artistic platform and a unifying community force. An orchestra of this calibre strengthens the cultural fabric of Townsville, bringing together musicians from diverse backgrounds and providing a powerful outlet for artistic expression.

2026 SOUNDS BRILLIANT – and a new commission

Looking ahead, Theodore Kuchar returns, joining the Orchestra to present an exciting and carefully curated concert series designed to inspire, entertain and continue raising artistic standards. Ambitious touring plans are on the horizon, further positioning Townsville as a recognised centre of excellence in the arts and drawing new audiences to North Queensland.

Orchestra Manager, Jessica Winton said, “we are currently preparing for our March 28 concert which includes Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A Major, and then onto collaboration with Cleveland Singers with Messiah Project Parts 2 & 3 on Sunday 19 April. November was a sold-out success, and this next performance promises to be just as popular. The project then leads into a Choral Winter School (6–12 July 2026), finishing with a full performance of Handel’s Messiah lead by Berlin-based conductor Volker Hedtfeld. The entire Messiah Part 1, 2 & 3!!”

In May, GBRO returns to the Hughenden Festival of Outback Skies with the premiere of a newly commissioned work. “We were honoured to be part of the festival in 2023, and it’s a privilege to return with a brand-new piece written for GBRO by William Barton, it will feature a chamber ensemble and didgeridoo. We will be performing at the festival’s finale under the starry outback sky  for what promises to be an unmissable event. If you can’t make it out west, don’t worry we will also perform the work in Townsville. This commission has been made possible thanks to Arts Queensland, and it represents a wonderful opportunity for GBRO,” said Winton.

June will see the return of Theodore Kuchar for the annual Chamber Music Concert, as well as the concert performed at the Townsville Civic Theatre featuring Oksana Hretchyn who will perform the Barber Violin Concerto. The beloved Queens Gardens Concert will continue in August and in October, under the baton of Andrew Ryder, GBRO will welcome Graeme Connors and IRAR band to present our "Stories" Concert as part of the North Australian Festival of Arts.

The next era for the Great Barrier Reef Orchestra promises to be bold, vibrant and deeply connected to its community.
