- The 27th annual Relay For Life will take place on 28-29 March 2026 at the AIS Track and Field Centre in Canberra, running for 24 hours
- Cancer Council ACT aims to raise $400,000 to support local cancer services, with $220,653 already raised three days before the event
Hundreds of Canberrans will come together later this weekend for one of the ACT’s most powerful community events, Relay For Life 2026
Cancer Council ACT is calling on the community to lace up their shoes and join the 24-hour event, which celebrates cancer survivors, honours those currently facing cancer, remembers loved ones lost, supports the carers who stand beside them, and raises vital funds to help save more lives right here in the ACT.
Now in its 27th year, Relay For Life will take place from 28–29 March 2026 at the AIS Track and Field Centre, where friends, families, workplaces, schools and community groups will take to the track together, demonstrating that the fight against cancer never stops.
Among those walking this year is Team Joanna. Helen first joined Relay For Life in 2025, just one month after losing her sister Joanna to cancer. Taking part became a meaningful way for Helen and her family to navigate their grief while honouring Joanna’s memory. This year, Helen, Joanna’s daughter Tina, and extended family will return to Relay For Life as Team Joanna, walking in her memory and supporting Cancer Council ACT.
Prior to her diagnosis, Joanna was an accomplished runner, completing seven marathons and seven half marathons. “I think Joanna would be thrilled – and probably tracking our every step – even though most of us will be walking rather than running!” Helen said. Remembering loved ones is a central part of Relay For Life, particularly during the Candlelight Ceremony – a deeply moving moment that honours survivors, carers and those we remember.
As night falls, the community comes together to pause, reflect and stand in solidarity with everyone affected by cancer. The Candlelight Ceremony is one of the most powerful moments of the event, connecting participants and reminding them why they relay. This year, participants are invited to share photos ahead of time so they can be featured during the ceremony.
Cancer Council ACT hopes to raise $400,000 through this year’s event to continue delivering essential services for the local community. Funds raised will help provide information and support for people impacted by cancer, empower Canberrans to reduce their cancer risk through prevention and education programs, and support life-saving cancer research. Importantly, every dollar raised in Canberra stays in Canberra.
As of 25 March, the Canberra community – including St Mary MacKillop College, which is hosting its own student-led Relay again this year – has already raised $220,653, with 3 days remaining until the event.
ACT Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith MLA said,
“Relay for Life is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we walk together.
“It’s an opportunity for our community to celebrate survivors, stand with those in treatment, honour cherished lives lost, support carers, and fuel the vital work that changes lives across the ACT.
“I’m pleased to support the Cancer Council ACT as it works across consumer empowerment, research and prevention towards a future free from cancer.”
Together, it’s all of us against cancer.
