Thousands of Australians under 65 with life-limiting illness are missing out on basic support to die at home.

Each year, an estimated 5,000–10,000 people fall between the NDIS, aged care and health systems, with no clear pathway to access essential home support such as personal care, domestic assistance and social support.

As a result, people are forced into hospital or residential care, not because they need to be there, but because the system cannot support them at home.

Palliative Care Australia (PCA), with Parliamentary Friends of Palliative Care co-convenors Senator Kerrynne Liddle and Senator Raff Ciccone, will bring a national coalition of advocates, clinicians and people with lived experience to Parliament House to highlight the issue and call for urgent reform.

Media opportunities

Press gallery members are welcome. Interviews will be available with sector leaders, clinicians and people with lived experience, offering insight into the policy and system gaps, and what needs to change to ensure younger Australians can access safe, coordinated end-of-life care at home.

Top health insurance claims revealed: New data shows what Australians use their cover for at every life stage

New national data reveals Australians rely on private hospital care at every stage of life – from neonatal intensive care for newborns, mental health treatment for young adults, and joint replacements that help older Australians stay independent. CEO of Private Healthcare Australia, Dr Rachel David, said the annual debate about health insurance premium changes often overlooked a key fact: health insurance delivers value differently depending on your age and life stage. “Every year we see people reconsider their cover when premiums change. But the reality is, most Australians don’t value their insurance until they face an unexpected health issue. “Health…

Monash research shows how to close the maternal health gap

Monash University researchers have unlocked the blueprint of how Australia’s health system can make better use of antenatal lifestyle coaching to improve patient outcomes and dismantle entrenched health inequality. The study, published in the journal Value in Health, found focusing resources on women above the healthy weight range offers the greatest health gains, and delivering programs routinely through public hospitals is the most powerful way to close the health inequality gap. Diet and physical activity coaching is already a proven evidence tool for preventing conditions like gestational diabetes and, consequently, type 2 diabetes. This research is the first to show…

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF)

Calls for financial relief for nurses and midwives struggling with cost-of-living pressures

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) is calling for immediate financial relief for nurses, midwives and aged care workers struggling with cost-of-living pressures fuelled by escalating global conflicts. ANMF Federal Secretary Annie Butler said health professionals are suffering financially, because unlike many other Australians, their vital frontline work cannot be performed from home, forcing them to absorb rising daily costs, such as fuel, tolls and parking. “On top of higher mortgages, rents and energy bills, the financial burden of simply getting to and from work is becoming untenable for many of our ANMF members,” Ms Butler said. “In these…
