New partnership to unlock innovation opportunities and accelerate capability outcomes for Defence, national security and AUKUS

DMTC Limited 3 mins read

Australian companies EarlyBirds and DMTC Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enable and accelerate defence-focused innovation, strengthen sovereign industrial capability, and improve the transition of emerging technologies into operational outcomes for Australia and like-minded alliance partners.

The MOU formalises and builds on prior collaboration between the two organisations.

Existing work packages have demonstrated how data-driven and technically informed innovation discovery and ecosystem mapping can complement structured Defence collaboration programs. The new agreement provides a pathway to further align EarlyBirds’ global innovation intelligence platform with DMTC’s established Defence engagement frameworks and program delivery expertise.

EarlyBirds and DMTC will explore collaborative opportunities to create clearer pathways for innovative technologies to transition from research and development into deployment. This is expected to include structured challenge-based engagements, coordinated technology scouting initiatives, and improved visibility of Australian industrial capabilities within broader Defence and national security ecosystems.

Importantly, the collaboration aims to strengthen Australia’s ability to rapidly identify and validate emerging technologies relevant to Defence needs and also position homegrown Australian innovation to be applied within allied frameworks such as AUKUS, PIPIR and Five Eyes partnerships.

DMTC CEO Dr Mark Hodge said the MOU reflects a shared commitment to accelerating innovation outcomes across Australia’s defence and national security sectors.

“Operating at the nexus of government, industry and the research community, DMTC deploys collaboration as a force multiplier; shepherding technologies through the most difficult phases of development and strengthening industrial pathways in support of Australia’s national defence mission.

This effort is richer for, and enabled by, an informed and dynamic view of both industrial capability and capacity.

DMTC and EarlyBirds share a clear ambition to accelerate the development of new sovereign capabilities while addressing pressing national challenges in capability delivery, supply chain resilience and workforce development.”

Dr Hodge said combining the expertise and resources of both organisations would deliver enhanced value to Government stakeholders.

“From surface ships to submarines, from health security and advanced manufacturing to hypersonics and other critical and emerging domains, collaboration with EarlyBirds will support both organisations to strengthen Australia’s national preparedness and resilience.

We see real potential in partnering on mission-critical initiatives – particularly with Defence sharpening its focus on both minimum viable capability and accelerated delivery of equipment and sustainment products into the hands of operators and end-users.”

Kris Poria, Co-Founder and CEO of EarlyBirds, said the partnership represents a natural evolution of an already productive working relationship.

“DMTC understands how to drive structured collaboration across Defence, industry, and research. Our platform provides global visibility into emerging technologies, innovators, and market dynamics in near real time. DMTC’s technology expertise adds a new dimension to the market intelligence tools we deploy.

Together, we can reduce the time it takes to discover relevant capabilities, assess their maturity, and align them with Defence priorities. This partnership is about accelerating innovation into impact.”

Jeff Penrose, Co-Founder and COO of EarlyBirds and former senior intelligence leader in the Australian Government, emphasised the importance of trusted innovation intelligence in complex environments.

“In national security and Defence contexts, decisions must be informed, timely, and evidence-based. EarlyBirds provides a structured, data-driven approach to identifying technologies and assessing capability landscapes. Working with DMTC allows that intelligence to be embedded within established Defence collaboration frameworks, strengthening both sovereign capability and allied interoperability.”

The MOU establishes intent and strategic direction for cooperation, while detailed program and project scopes will be defined through subsequent agreements.

As the global technology landscape continues to evolve, Defence organisations face increasing pressure to identify, validate, and integrate emerging technologies at speed. This partnership reflects a shared understanding that innovation success depends not only on discovery, but also on structured collaboration, risk reduction, and effective transition pathways.

Together, EarlyBirds and DMTC aim to expedite Australia’s innovation-to-capability pipeline, enhance sovereign resilience, and contribute to broader allied technological advantage.

Opportunity to deliver community-creating suburb

The Tasmanian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects supports the call by Premier, Jeremy Rockliff, to develop the surplus Department of Defence land at Dowsing Point in Hobart into a new suburb, with quality housing, amenities, and public space. “With well-designed and considered planning, that incorporates community input and First Nations consultation, this parcel of land provides an opportunity to assist with delivering much-needed housing for Hobart,” says Tasmanian Chapter President, Daniel Lane. “Early planning for this type of development, and engagement of built environment professionals – including architects, planners, urban designers and landscape architects – is essential to…

MEDIA RELEASE: EVs have always been about fuel security

As the United States and Israel’s attack on Iran continues to plunge the region into chaos, oil andgas prices are skyrocketing. The inflationary impact will be felt in key sectors like transport andlogistics, agriculture and mining, with consumers invariably paying the price. The AustralianElectric Vehicle Association (AEVA) was formed under near-identical circumstances, following theYom Kippur war of 1973. Independence from liquid fossil fuels is an energy security priority. “EVs have always been about fuel security” said AEVA National President, James Pickering.“53years ago, AEVA was formed by a team of scientists, engineers, energy and transport professionals, and ordinary Australians; all with the…

Weld Australia Welcomes Landmark AUKUS Investment in South Australia

Weld Australia has welcomed the Albanese and Malinauskas Governments’ announcement of a $3.9 billion investment into the Submarine Construction Yard at Osborne, describing it as a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Australia’s advanced manufacturing industry. The investment forms part of a projected $30 billion infrastructure program over coming decades and will support the construction of Australia’s conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines under AUKUS, creating nearly 10,000 jobs across South Australia alone. For Weld Australia, the peak body representing the nation’s welding industry, the announcement signals not just economic stimulus, but a defining moment for sovereign industrial capability. “This is nation-building at its most strategic,”…
