The Tasmanian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects supports the call by Premier, Jeremy Rockliff, to develop the surplus Department of Defence land at Dowsing Point in Hobart into a new suburb, with quality housing, amenities, and public space.
“With well-designed and considered planning, that incorporates community input and First Nations consultation, this parcel of land provides an opportunity to assist with delivering much-needed housing for Hobart,” says Tasmanian Chapter President, Daniel Lane.
“Early planning for this type of development, and engagement of built environment professionals – including architects, planners, urban designers and landscape architects – is essential to ensure that the right decisions are made from the outset,” Mr Lane says. “Consultation and with the Tasmanian Government’s Strategic Architectural and Urban Design Advisor, can help with ensuring the best outcome for the community.”
This parcel of land presents an opportunity for a suburb that assists with housing supply, but also contributes to employment, and provides quality open space and cultural infrastructure for all to enjoy.
The Institute calls on the government to require best-practice design governance, including thorough site assessment, including servicing and heritage assessments, meaningful community engagement, and independent design review so these extraordinary precincts become places people celebrate for generations to come.
