Rising fuel prices highlight importance of increasing EV uptake

With fuel prices rising in Australia, policies encouraging EV adoption are integral to strengthening the nation's energy security, the peak body for novated leasing said.

Ongoing global conflict is pushing fuel prices higher, as Australia maintains over a month’s worth of petrol and diesel reserves.

Meanwhile, the Electric Car Discount has put well in excess of 100,000 additional EVs on our roads, and Treasurer Jim Chalmers yesterday acknowledged the surge in EV uptake as a win for drivers, businesses and the climate.

National Automotive Leasing and Salary Packaging Association (NALSPA) chief executive Rohan Martin said more electric cars in Australia is good for drivers and Australia.

“With petrol prices unfortunately set to rise amid global conflict, helping more Australians afford cleaner, cheaper-to-run cars makes sense for households and the nation,” Mr Martin said.

“The hundreds of thousands of Australians who have made the switch are saving thousands of dollars every year on fuel and maintenance costs which is super helpful to them especially now as cost-of-living pressures further mount.

"More EVs on our roads means lower emissions, which is good for our climate, and less dependence on foreign oil, which strengthens our energy and fuel security. More EVs are in the national and household interest.

"The Electric Car Discount is the primary driver of EV uptake because it's making them affordable and accessible for everyday Australians. Without the Discount, more than 100,000 motorists would be feeling extra pain at the pump and Australia's fuel reserves would be under even greater strain.

“It’s really encouraging to see the Federal Treasurer recognise the EV Discount’s positive impact and commit to maintaining the right settings to support EV uptake because it’s good for drivers, the climate and the economy.

"We commend the Albanese Government which is doing all the right things when it comes to accelerating EV adoption, from its supply-side NVES to its demand-side Electric Car Discount, however we know there is still much more to do if we are to achieve our climate targets.”

Coalition’s call to scrap Electric Car Discount during fuel crisis doesn’t make sense

Australia’s peak body for novated leasing said the Coalition’s call to scrap the Electric Car Discount during a fuel crisis makes no sense. The Coalition wants to end the EV discount, which is helping Australians avoid petrol and its price shocks for good, in order to fund a short three-month halving ofthe fuel excise.“Any proposal to cut or reduce the EV Discount during the middle of a fuel crisis is irrational,” National Automotive Leasing and Salary Packaging Association (NALSPA) CEO Rohan Martin said.“It makes no sense to cut a policy that is helping Australians avoid petrol forever purely to fund a…

Eraring decision a milestone for coal power workers

The Net Zero Economy Authority’s decision to apply for enforceable, co-ordinated transition support for workers affected by the closure of Eraring Power Station is an important milestone for coal power workers and communities, the Mining and Energy Union said today. NZEA CEO David Shankey announced today he has applied to the Fair Work Commission for a ‘Community of Interest’ determination, the first step towards an Energy Industry Jobs Plan which ensures affected workers receive training and redeployment support. The application covers direct and contractor employees at the power station and captured coal mine Myuna, covering 1,300 workers. MEU General President…

Green thumbs up: Project combines YouTube and AI to boost biosecurity

Gardening videos attract millions of views on YouTube each year, but an innovative research project has showed how this content could be critical in protecting Australia’s biosecurity. The project by Charles Darwin University (CDU), supported through the Northern Australia Biosecurity Strategy, combined YouTube gardening content and OpenAI to map urban green spaces and detect previously unregistered community gardens across northern Australia. Researchers fed a dataset of YouTube content into detailed large language model (LLM) prompts. The prompts classified whether a video related to community gardens and extracted the name of the garden, its address and a summary of the clip.…
