Rising fuel prices highlight importance of increasing EV uptake
With fuel prices rising in Australia, policies encouraging EV adoption are integral to strengthening the nation's energy security, the peak body for novated leasing said.
Ongoing global conflict is pushing fuel prices higher, as Australia maintains over a month’s worth of petrol and diesel reserves.
Meanwhile, the Electric Car Discount has put well in excess of 100,000 additional EVs on our roads, and Treasurer Jim Chalmers yesterday acknowledged the surge in EV uptake as a win for drivers, businesses and the climate.
National Automotive Leasing and Salary Packaging Association (NALSPA) chief executive Rohan Martin said more electric cars in Australia is good for drivers and Australia.
“With petrol prices unfortunately set to rise amid global conflict, helping more Australians afford cleaner, cheaper-to-run cars makes sense for households and the nation,” Mr Martin said.
“The hundreds of thousands of Australians who have made the switch are saving thousands of dollars every year on fuel and maintenance costs which is super helpful to them especially now as cost-of-living pressures further mount.
"More EVs on our roads means lower emissions, which is good for our climate, and less dependence on foreign oil, which strengthens our energy and fuel security. More EVs are in the national and household interest.
"The Electric Car Discount is the primary driver of EV uptake because it's making them affordable and accessible for everyday Australians. Without the Discount, more than 100,000 motorists would be feeling extra pain at the pump and Australia's fuel reserves would be under even greater strain.
“It’s really encouraging to see the Federal Treasurer recognise the EV Discount’s positive impact and commit to maintaining the right settings to support EV uptake because it’s good for drivers, the climate and the economy.
"We commend the Albanese Government which is doing all the right things when it comes to accelerating EV adoption, from its supply-side NVES to its demand-side Electric Car Discount, however we know there is still much more to do if we are to achieve our climate targets.”
