Residents in stand-alone houses are invited to turn everyday food scraps into a valuable garden resource through Council’s new Home Compost Initiative, a hands-on program designed to help households compost successfully at home.
With almost 40% of the average red general waste bin made up of food waste, and 43% of homes in the Willoughby Council local government area classified as single dwellings, Council identified a clear opportunity to help residents manage food waste more sustainably right in their own backyards.
A pilot program delivered last year showed how effective personalised support can be, helping households divert 2.5 tonnes of food waste from landfill. Nearly all participants continued composting well beyond the trial period, turning composting into a lasting habit that benefits both their gardens and the environment.
When food waste ends up in landfill, it breaks down without oxygen and produces methane – a potent greenhouse gas that contributes significantly to climate change. Composting at home prevents these emissions and reduces the environmental impact associated with transporting waste, while producing free, nutrient-rich fertiliser for their garden.
Many residents like the idea of composting but are uncertain how to get started, while concerns about odours and pests can also hold them back. The Home Compost Initiative removes these barriers by sending a composting expert directly to participants’ gardens to ensure everything is set up correctly from day one.
Participants receive a two-hour in-home setup, followed by three short check-in visits and ongoing troubleshooting support over eight months to help build confidence and good habits. In return, households commit to purchasing two in-ground compost bins and actively taking part in the program.
Applications are now open.
