Winter Snow Threats Put Solar Power Plants at Risk, GBP Highlights Preventive Solutions and Restoration Services

GBP K.K. 2 mins read
Key Facts:
  • Snow accumulation poses significant structural risks to solar power plants, with fresh snow weighing 50-150 kg/m³ and compacted snow exceeding 300 kg/m³
  • Potential hazards include mounting structure collapse, panel damage, cable disconnections and post-snowmelt fire risks
  • Preventative measures include proper panel spacing, reinforced mounting structures, optimised tilt angles and increased structural height
  • GBP offers restoration support services including assessment, materials and construction for snow-damaged facilities
  • Proactive risk management becomes increasingly important as extreme weather events grow more frequent

GBP, a leading provider of energy storage and power infrastructure solutions, is highlighting the growing risks that winter snowfall poses to solar power plants, particularly in heavy snow regions.

While snowfall may appear light, its accumulated weight can place significant stress on solar infrastructure. Fresh snow typically weighs between 50–150 kg per cubic metre, but when compacted or saturated, it can exceed 300 kg. Under extreme conditions, these loads may surpass design limits, leading to structural damage and operational shutdowns.

Solar facilities exposed to severe snowfall may face mounting structure collapse, panel damage and cable disconnections. In addition, undetected damage can create fire risks when systems resume operation after snowmelt, due to overheating or short circuits.

GBP notes that many of these risks can be mitigated through proper design and planning. Key measures include ensuring sufficient spacing between panel rows for snow removal, reinforcing mounting structures to improve load distribution, and installing panels at optimised tilt angles to reduce snow accumulation. Increasing structural height and adopting high-rigidity panels can further enhance system resilience.

The company also provides integrated restoration support, including site assessment, material supply and construction, to help solar plant operators recover quickly from snow-related damage and minimise downtime.

As extreme weather events become more frequent, GBP emphasises the importance of proactive risk management to protect solar assets and maintain stable power generation.
