In response to the current fuel crisis, the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) is seeking to increase the travel allowance paid to nurses and midwives who use their own vehicles for work.
The ANMF filed an application with the Fair Work Commission (FWC) on Monday for a variation to the Nurses Award 2020 for a period of 12-months that will allow the motor vehicle/fuel allowance (not less than $0.99 per kilometre) to be adjusted in response to fluctuations in fuel prices.
Other unions also filed applications to vary their own respective Awards.
Federal Secretary Annie Butler said the proposed variation to the Nurses Award 2020 responds directly to the sharp rise in fuel prices for members, who are currently required to use their own vehicles for work, to ensure they receive fair compensation for costs they incur while delivering care in the community.
“Many ANMF members rely on their personal vehicles to deliver essential care in homes, communities and health services across Australia, but with fuel costs escalating, we know that the current allowance in the Award no longer reflects the real cost of their work‑related travel,” Ms Butler said.
“Our members are telling us that the current allowance is nowhere near enough to cover their costs.
“Many of our members, especially in those working in aged care, are saying they simply can’t afford to go to work, exacerbating current workforce shortages and, most critically, leaving too many Australians without the care they need.
“This variation to the Award is an essential measure to support our members during an unprecedented cost‑of‑living crisis and ensure ongoing care to the community.”
