Australia’s construction sector is in the grip of a significant skills shortage, but according to a national training provider, the path into the industry may be shorter than many people think, with job-ready training possible in as little as a single day.
National White Card Courses Director Samuel Bohr said while many roles in construction require trade qualifications and experience, entry-level opportunities are far more accessible than most people realise.
“Entering the industry can be as simple as completing a one-day White Card course,” he said.
“It’s the minimum requirement for working on-site, and it opens the door to a wide range of entry-level roles across construction, civil and related industries.”
Beyond acting as a safety requirement, a White Card is widely recognised as the first step into a broad range of entry-level construction roles, many of which require no prior experience.
Common entry-level positions include general labourers, site assistants, traffic controllers, construction cleaners and offsiders, with workers often able to secure casual or ongoing work through labour hire firms shortly after obtaining their certification.
Mr Bohr said these roles can provide a practical starting point for people looking to enter the workforce quickly or transition into a new career.
“A White Card doesn’t lock you into one pathway. It gets you onto site,” he said.
“From there, people can explore different roles, gain experience, and decide whether they want to pursue a trade or continue working in general construction.”
With major infrastructure projects, housing developments and civil works continuing across Australia, demand for entry-level workers remains strong, particularly in high-growth regions.
Industry data consistently shows construction as one of the country’s largest employing sectors, with ongoing workforce shortages creating opportunities for new entrants at all levels.
“Right now, there are thousands of roles that need to be filled,” Mr Bohr said.
“For someone who’s work-ready and has their White Card, there are genuine opportunities to start earning almost immediately.”
Entry-level construction roles can offer competitive hourly rates compared to other industries requiring no prior qualifications, with many labouring positions starting from around $30 to $40 per hour depending on location, employer and site conditions. Overtime, allowances and weekend work can further increase earnings.
Mr Bohr said the combination of low barriers to entry and strong earning potential makes construction an appealing option for a wide range of Australians, including school leavers, career changers and those returning to the workforce.
“There aren’t many industries where you can complete a one-day course and step into a job that pays well and offers long-term career pathways,” he said.
“That’s what makes construction such a strong option right now.”
As Australia continues to invest in infrastructure and housing, training providers say the White Card will remain a critical gateway for anyone looking to take advantage of the opportunities within the sector.
