This International Guide Dog Day (Wednesday April 29th), a group of 50 Seeing Eye Dogs, their handlers and puppies-in-training will walk the streets of Melbourne to celebrate the life-changing work of all dog guides.
Meeting at Federation Square, the group will make a loop through Southbank before heading back to Federation Square where members of the public are encouraged to come down and learn more about Seeing Eye Dogs and volunteer opportunities, while enjoying puppy cuddles.
Vision Australia Seeing Eye Dogs National Manager, Dr. Nicola Cotton, said that the day is an important one for everyone who is involved in the journey of a Seeing Eye Dog – from trainers, veterinary staff and donors to volunteers and clients.
“It takes around two years of rigorous training and care before a Seeing Eye Dog can become fully qualified. The cost to train and care for just one Seeing Eye Dog is in excess of $50,000,” said Dr. Cotton.
“The impact that a Seeing Eye Dog has in the life of someone who is blind or has low vision is enormous – they can increase their mobility and independence.
“I’m proud to say that we currently have over 260 active handlers and working Seeing Eye Dogs across Australia. This achievement wouldn’t be possible without the support of our community.
“We welcome people to come along and chat to our team about the program and the services we can provide. Whether you are interested in our services, or volunteering with us, you can learn more while getting a dose of puppy cuddles.”
