The Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) is enhancing the TPB Public Register to give tax practitioners greater control over their published contact details. This supports both personal and physical safety and stronger cyber security protections.
From today, registered tax practitioners will be able to choose which contact details appear on their TPB Register record and update them at any time through My Profile. Contact details can include a physical address such as business address, residential or postal address, an email address or a phone number.
New applicants will also be able to select their preferred published contact details when submitting a registration application.
The update aligns with the Australian Government’s broader focus on safeguarding personal information and reducing the risks associated with publicly available data. The TPB’s changes are designed to reduce risks associated with data scraping, phishing, and the misuse of publicly available information.
TPB Chair Peter de Cure AM said the enhancements reflect the TPB’s commitment to tax practitioner safety while maintaining the integrity and transparency of the TPB Public Register.
‘This enhancement strikes the right balance between transparency for consumers and security for tax practitioners,’ Mr de Cure said. ‘We know the TPB Public Register is heavily used, with around 1.5 million searches completed each year. These improvements ensure it remains a trusted and secure source of truth.’
To further strengthen cyber security, a CAPTCHA step has been introduced for users accessing practitioner contact details on the TPB Register.
At least one contact detail must remain publicly available on the TPB Public Register under Tax Agent Services Regulations 2022 (TASR). These enhancements form part of the TPB’s ongoing work to strengthen digital services and support tax practitioner safety.
