News in brief:
Alongside the PM, Microsoft’s Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella today announced a historic A$25 billion investment – the company’s largest in Australia to date – to help the nation to seize the economic and social benefits of the AI era. The announcement was made at Microsoft’s Sydney AI Tour at the ICC, with more than 8,000 attendees. Full announcement available here and copied below.
Microsoft’s announcement spans three critical areas that support delivery of the Government's National AI Plan:
  1. Digital infrastructure: A$25 billion investment over three years that will significantly expand Microsoft's Azure AI infrastructure across Australia. A MOU with the Australian Government affirming Microsoft’s commitment to the Government's recently released expectations of datacentres and AI infrastructure developers. Collaboration with the newly established Australian AI Safety Institute.
  2. Cybersecurity and economic resilience: Microsoft is expanding the Microsoft–Australian Signals Directorate Cyber Shield (MACS) partnership established in 2023 and will deepen its collaboration with the ASD, Home Affairs and the Digital Transformation Agency to protect Australia's most critical government systems and infrastructure
  3. Equipping 3 million Aussies with AI skills: Microsoft will train three million Australians with workforce-ready AI skills by 2028 – the largest commitment of its kind ever made in Australia. The commitment builds on the company’s previous goal to skill one million people across Australia and New Zealand by the end of 2025, which was achieved ahead of time, and underscores the urgency and demand for these skills as AI reshapes every industry and every role Full details on skilling initiatives available here.
Further details in blog post here and imagery available here.
The investments come as Microsoft and EY-Parthenon released new analysis that revealed in FY25:
  • Microsoft contributed an estimated A$36 billion in economic value to Australia's GDP
  • Microsoft's ecosystem supports the equivalent of 186,000 full time employees in Australia
  • Microsoft's cloud and partner ecosystem in Australia generated A$25 billion in economic value
  • Microsoft enabled up to $22 billion in economic value through productivity gains
