Queensland’s Boston Leather bucks back into Origin contention with Nowra masterclass

PBR Origin teams to be announced Wednesday

Queensland’s Boston Leather has produced a perfect 2-for-2 performance to win the 2026 Monster Energy Nowra PBR Invitational on Saturday night, climbing to ninth in the PBR Australia National Standings, in a buckfest that was crucial for ORIGIN selection, with NSW and Queensland teams announced this Wednesday.  RIDE VISION AND BROLL HERE

The Calliope cowboy and 2024 PBR Australian National Champion was the only rider to finish the event with two qualified rides, compiling the highest two-round aggregate score of the season of 173.30 points to take home more than $9,000 in prizemoney. The 20-year-old has battled through multiple injuries on his way to returning to the winner’s circle. His last victory came at the Mackay Invitational in 2024, where he used a personal 1-2 finish to provide a massive boost to his National Championship campaign.

Splitting second place at the 2026 Nowra Invitational were Tumut talent Dylan Weir and Oberon bull rider Jack Rowlandson, who both finished with excellent scores of 84.60 points in Round 1. Moura’s Dawson Foden finished fourth on 82.70 points after he rode Asmodeus (Swain Cattle Company) in the opening round. Toby Collins got the cowboys off to a great start, covering Maltmans Juggernaut (Diamond S Bucking Bulls) in the first trip of the night for 82.20 points. The Maldon veteran finished in fifth place, just ahead of Oberon’s Charlie Bailey, who was marked 82-points aboard Pearl Snap (TnR Bucking Bulls).

Reigning National Champion Kurt Shephard did his job in the opening round, handling everything that Bad Boy Brown (Lazy G Bucking Bulls) could throw at him for 81.00 points. However, he couldn’t get by Wetzel (TnR Bucking Bulls) in their highly anticipated Championship Round bout, leaving him stranded in seventh place.

Brazilian cowboy Keny Roger de Oliveira was the eighth and final bull rider to get his name on the leaderboard in Nowra. He rode Silver Bullet (CF7 Bucking Bulls) for 80.20 points in Round 1.

It comes as no surprise that Boston Leather is our biggest mover of the week on the 2026 PBR Australian National Standings Leaderboard. He picked up the maximum 296 points to leap from 35th to 9th and into a qualification spot for Team Queensland for the upcoming PBR Origin Series, which begins later this month in Newcastle.

Event runner-up’s Dylan Weir and Jack Rowlandson both collected 134.50 points to move up a handful of spots and into 15th and 16th place respectively to secure their spots in Team New South Wales.

Dawson Foden was the other big mover this week, jumping up eight spots into 20th place after he secured 78 points for his fourth-place finish.

The K3F Bucking Bulls and Mead Partnership took home their first YETI High Marked Bull of the Event award on the Monster Energy Tour after BJ produced a blistering 43.30 point trip in the Championship Round. The bull turned back to the left with plenty of vigour to dispatch Charlie Bailey in just 1.93 seconds.

Wetzel, from TnR Bucking Bulls had the second-highest trip of the event, marked 42.90 points in his 4.18 second matchup with Kurt Shephard in the final round.

Finishing third on the leaderboard were Seven Eleven (CF7 Bucking Bulls/Pugh/ADS Mining Service) and Leather Jacket (TnR Bucking Bulls). Both bulls were awarded 42.70 points in their short-go matchups with Dylan Weir (3.26 seconds BOT) and Boston Leather.

Next up for the cowboys of the PBR Australia Monster Energy Tour are the first two games of the 2026 PBR Origin Series.

Match 1 will be held at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre on 30 May, with the Brisbane Entertainment Centre hosting Match 2 on 6 June.

Big Tobacco tax cut would hand multinational tobacco companies a $2.3 billion windfall

A 50 percent cut to tobacco customs duties would hand multinational tobacco companies an estimated windfall worth around $2.3 billion annually, according to the Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA). Adjunct Professor Terry Slevin, the association’s CEO, says the new estimates reinforce the need for governments to remain strong against intense tobacco industry lobbying – an issue that was put in the spotlight last week during Senate inquiry hearings into illegal tobacco. “At a time when 66 Australians die every day from tobacco-related disease, the tobacco industry appeared before the senate inquiry hearing arguing for cheaper cigarettes and a tax…
