Greenpeace Australia Pacific calls on Cook Government to commit to Renewable Energy Target following federal renewable energy investment announcement

Greenpeace Australia Pacific 2 mins read

PERTH, Monday 4 May 2026 — Greenpeace Australia Pacific has welcomed the Federal Government’s investment in 10 Western Australian renewable energy projects and calls on the WA Cook Government to commit to an overdue WA Renewable Energy Target.

On 2 May 2026, Federal Climate and Energy Minister Chris Bowen, Assistant Climate and Energy Minister Josh Wilson and WA Minister for Energy and Decarbonisation Amber-Jade Sanderson announced support for 10 renewable energy projects in WA through the Albanese Government’s Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS). This increases the total number of CIS tenders in WA from four to a total 14 out of 79 across the country.

The investment is a much-needed boost for the lagging transition of WA’s economy away from insecure fossil fuels, but would be strengthened if the Cook Labor Government committed to a Renewable Energy Target and stopped pushing outdated, polluting gas projects like Woodside’s Browse.

Geoff Bice, WA Campaign Lead at Greenpeace Australia Pacific, said: “This commitment to accelerating the roll-out of renewable energy in WA by the Albanese and Cook Governments is an example of positive action for WA’s transition to cheap, clean, reliable energy and will support communities in the necessary shift from polluting fossil fuels.

“More than half a million WA households have taken the initiative to install rooftop solar, demonstrating strong popular support for renewable energy, and modelling shows that we have more than enough clean sun and wind to power the entire WA economy. Yet, WA is the only Labor government without a committed Renewable Energy Target.

“The investment of federal funding should give the WA Government greater confidence to commit to a strong Renewable Energy Target for the South West Interconnected System grid — an essential lever for achieving the phase out of coal and gas in WA.

“There is still more to be done. WA can become a renewable energy powerhouse with ongoing investment at a state and federal level in transmission, renewable energy projects and green commodities right across the state, not just the south west grid.

“Western Australian communities deserve decisive and timely action from the Cook and Albanese Governments to keep up with the inevitable and vital energy transition. Greenpeace will continue to advocate for clean, safe, affordable wind and solar energy for all Australians.”

SYDNEY, Monday 4 May 2026 — Following the illegal detention of six Australians by the Israeli military, Greenpeace Australia Pacific is calling on the Australian Government to act with urgency to uphold international law and ensure the protection of the Global Sumud Flotilla with concrete steps to ensure its safe passage to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. NOPSEMA decision to allow further delays in the clean-up of Bass Strait oil and gas infrastructure is a lost economic opportunity and a sign of regulatory weakness.

Key Facts: NOPSEMA has approved an EP for the removal of infrastructure in the Bass Strait belonging to ExxonMobil Australia and Woodside The approval allows for tens of thousands of tonnes of steel to be left behind. This is a lost economic opportunity and a further delay to the timely decommissioning of oil and gas infrastructure.Friends of the Earth Melbourne has strongly condemned the decision by the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Management Authority (NOPSEMA) to approve an environment plan permitting ExxonMobil Australia and Woodside (the Joint Venture) to leave tens of thousands of tonnes of steel behind in the…

“An absolute sham”: Greenpeace Japan and Greenpeace Australia Pacific call-out Prime Ministers Takaichi and Albanese for exploiting fossil fuel crisis to entrench gas

SYDNEY, Friday 1 May 2026 — Ahead of the Prime Minister of Japan’s visit to Australia next week, Greenpeace Japan and Greenpeace Australia Pacific have criticised the two countries for taking advantage of the global fossil fuel crisis to entrench gas dependence, instead of supporting the transition to homegrown renewables. Prime Minister Takaichi is visiting Australia from Sunday 3 May to Tuesday 5 May, to promote stronger military cooperation and to shore up Australia’s gas exports. The Japanese Government has made extraordinary interventions in Australia’s political debate, claiming gas is required for energy security, yet Japanese corporations make billions re-selling…
