Homelessness NSW is profoundly saddened by the death of a baby in a makeshift camp in Wagga Wagga, and extends its deepest condolences to all those affected.
“This is an absolutely devastating and heartbreaking loss and our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy," Homelessness NSW CEO Dom Rowe said.
“This is a stark reminder that homelessness is dangerous and often life-threatening, and it should not be happening in a country with the wealth and means to end it.
“The death of every person experiencing homelessness is a tragedy and very often a systematic failure.
“We strongly support mandating the reporting of homelessness deaths to the coroner to help determine where, where and how deaths occur.”
We also call on the state government to urgently invest more in social housing and homelessness services.
“Decades of under-investment in social housing has left people with limited pathways out of homelessness and into a safe home,” said Ms Rowe.
