Law meets life in regional Victoria during Law Week (18 - 24 May 2026)
Victorians will have access to more than 100 free and some low-cost events during Victorian Law Week (18–24 May 2026), with practical help on everyday issues like renting, work, family, money and buying goods and services.
With events hosted by community organisations, legal services and government agencies across the state, this year’s theme, Where law meets life, focuses on what to do and where to get help when everyday problems involve the law.
The program features events across the state, including Bendigo, Shepperton and the Hume region, Horsham and the Grampians, and Gippsland (including the Bass Coast). These sessions ensure regional communities have access to practical legal information and support.
Events are designed for people with no legal background and are run by community organisations, legal services and government agencies. They are delivered in person in local community spaces, as well as live online.
Events include:
- Free and low-cost sessions on getting legal help with common issues including housing, work, relationships, purchasing goods and money
- Practical guidance on rights, responsibilities and where to find help
- Opportunities to ask questions, hear from experts and learn how the justice system works.
Victoria Law Foundation Executive Director Lynne Haultain said Victorian Law Week is about making the law feel practical and accessible for people navigating real-life problems.
“Law usually meets life in the everyday. It could be dodgy purchases, bond disputes or unpaid wages. Victorian Law Week is about giving people clear, reliable information and a way to find the right help, without the jargon,” Ms Haultain said.
Victorian Law Week event highlights:
- The Gentle Art of Making a Complaint: understand the role of ombudsmen and how they accept, investigate and resolve complaints.
- Learn How the Law Helps with Everyday Problems: helping you understand your rights, identify options, and find local support services when problems arise.
- Understanding Your Rights at Work: information session covering your rights at work, how to stay safe, and where to get help if issues arise.
- Demystifying Your Insurance Policy: a practical workshop on home, contents and farm insurance, including underinsurance, post‑disaster claims, and how to understand what your policy really covers.
- Where Law Meets Life (and Death): information on making a Will and appointing Powers of Attorney
- Quiz a Cop: from roundabouts to e‑bikes, quiz a friendly police officer on the road rules that confuse us most.
- Flying the Coop: A Practical Guide to Growing Up and Moving Out: a practical session on knowing your rights when adulting, renting, working, and staying out of trouble.
- Responsible Pet Ownership in Greater Shepparton: learn about animal‑related local laws that apply to pet owners.
