MEDIA ALERT: EV support vital to cut petrol bills and climate pollution for Australian families

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Australian families looking to cut their fuel bills and beat the energy crisis with clean solutions will welcome news the Federal Government is maintaining its electric vehicle discount measures in this year’s Budget.

But the government’s plan to cut support back by 75% after 2029 will make it harder for Australians to free themselves from petrol price pain.

Climate Council CEO Amanda McKenzie said polling released by the Climate Council today showed about two-thirds of Australians want this Budget to make EVs more affordable.

She said families using the policy tended to be those in the middle to outer suburbs - with long commutes, and crippling petrol bills.

Amanda McKenzie said: "This policy has already opened the EV door for hundreds of thousands of Aussie families in middle and outer suburbs facing enormous fuel bills.”

Polling released today shows two-thirds of Australians want this Federal Budget to make EVs more affordable and give them more control over their bills.

"But from 2029 the government plans to put the brakes on progress, making it harder for Australians to get into an EV and free themselves from petrol price pain. New EV commitments will be vital to leave petrol bills and climate pollution in the rearview mirror.”

WA Government’s fumble of emissions reduction targets would be a betrayal of community and science

PERTH, Tuesday 5 May 2026 — Greenpeace has voiced alarm over reports that the WA Cook Government plans to backpedal on its commitment to state emissions reduction targets, and called again for a clear plan to urgently reduce carbon pollution. Reports state that a leaked revised climate plan from the Cook Government would attempt to address carbon emissions solely through initiatives like green exports, carbon capture and storage, and renewable energy production, rather than emissions reduction targets — something all other states and territories aside from the NT have. Greenpeace has highlighted the Cook Government has also failed to set…

$124.5m for an energy terminal, but no plan to protect the Bay

Despite five years of community calls and an existing state commitment to Marine Spatial Planning, no funding wasallocatedfor a Marine Spatial Plan or for the ongoing protection and restoration of Western Port Bay. Western Port Bay is one of Victoria’s most important marine environments, internationally recognised as both a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and Ramsar wetland. It’s home to incredible wildlife like dolphins, Curlew Sandpipers and Little Penguins, yet its health is under increasing pressure from pollution, population growth and major industrial proposals. With pressure growing from industrial proposals and a rapidly expanding catchment, advocates say the need for coordinated planning…
