Significant U.S. political figure touring Australia this week

A contemporary of new NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Bernie Sanders is in Australia until June 2, with major speaking engagements in Sydney, Wollongong, Canberra and Melbourne.
Bhaskar Sunkara is the founding editor of Jacobin magazine and President of US progressive journal The Nation and is a significant figure in US politics and progressive left thinking, especially among young people. He is closely associated with Senator Bernie Sanders, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and the new Mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani - and knows these national political figures personally.
He was an early supporter of Mamdani, endorsing him and campaigning alongside him during the NYC mayoral campaign. He has first person insights into contemporary US politics, the rise of authoritarianism under Trump, and the groundswell of support - particularly among young people - for progressive alternatives to the status quo.
