RACGP welcomes expanded access to needle-free flu vaccines for Queensland children

Royal Australian College of GPs 2 mins read

The Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) has welcomed the Queensland Government’s decision to expand eligibility for the needlefree FluMist vaccine, making it available to children and teenagers aged 6–17 who are uncomfortable with needlebased vaccination.

RACGP Queensland Chair Dr Cath Hester said the move will make flu vaccination more accessible and less stressful for many families, particularly those with children who experience anxiety, disability or sensory sensitivities.

“Providing a needlefree option removes a significant barrier to vaccination for some children and their families,” she said.

“This is a practical step that will support higher vaccination uptake, which is critical as we head into peak flu season.”

The expansion is part of the Queensland Government’s $31 million free flu vaccination program, which continues to be delivered through general practices, pharmacies and vaccination clinics across the state.

The RACGP said general practice plays a central role in delivering safe, highquality vaccinations and ensuring patients receive care tailored to their individual needs.

“GPs are best placed to guide families on the most appropriate vaccine option for each child,” Dr Hester said.

“This includes supporting informed decisions and ensuring care is delivered in a safe, trusted environment.”

With flu cases expected to increase over winter, the RACGP is encouraging families to take advantage of the expanded program while supplies of FluMist are available.

“Vaccination remains the most effective way to protect children and the community from influenza,” Dr Hester said.

“We encourage families to speak to their GP and get vaccinated as soon as possible.”
