Winter is now upon us, which means many Victorians will be switching on gas heating, using more hot water, and cooking more meals at home.
The Essential Services Commission is calling on Victorians to check whether they are on their retailer’s best gas offer before higher winter usage appears on their bills.
Recent data from the Essential Services Commission shows that 45 per cent of gas customers could save more than 15 per cent on their gas bills simply by accepting their retailer’s best gas offer.
Electricity customers, in comparison, are more likely to be on their retailer’s best offer, although 28 per cent could still save more by switching.
In Victoria, gas retailers must tell customers at least once every four months if they can offer a better deal on gas prices. This information appears on bills and shows whether customers could save money by switching to another offer with the same retailer.
Customers who are already on their retailer’s best gas offer may still find a better deal in the market by using the government’s Victorian Energy Compare website.
Customers experiencing difficulty paying their bills should contact their retailer as early as possible to discuss available support.
