The ACT Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) is celebrating 8 years of recycling that makes cents. The birthday coincides with the roll out of new counting technology at all cash-back depots making it faster than ever to participate in the scheme.
Since launching on 30 June 2018, the ACT community has recycled almost 480 million eligible drink containers through local return points, resulting in nearly $48 million in container refunds back in people’s pockets.
Returning your eligible bottles, cans and cartons for the 10c refund at your local ACT CDS return point is now part of people’s routines. Three out of four ACT adults have participated in the scheme, the majority doing so monthly, according to the latest consumer research.
And thanks to recent upgrades at all ACT CDS cash-back depots, it’s now a lot quicker. Each depot has been upgraded with all new AI-based technology which can process up to 600 drink containers in a minute.
Simply tip your eligible drink containers into the mouth of the machine and the technology does the rest.
The ACT scheme has grown into an increasingly important funding stream for many charities, community groups and individuals across the Territory. The container refunds have been used to fund everything from weddings and overseas trips to providing meals for people doing it tough and caring for injured wildlife.
The ACT CDS is an ACT Government initiative delivered in partnership between the ACT Government, scheme coordinator Exchange for Change and network operator Return-It.
There are currently 20 return points located across Canberra including cash-back depots, drop & go pods, drop & go points at participating IGAs and reverse vending machines.
