Public Works Committee releases Report 4/2026

Parliament of Australia 2 mins read

Today, Mr Tony Zappia MP, Chair of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works presented the Public Works Committee’s fourth report of 2026 to the House of Representatives.

Report 4/2026 – Referral made in March 2026 considers the inquiry into Australian Nuclear Science and Technology—Decommissioning of the National Research Cyclotron Facility, Camperdown NSW. The works propose to demolish the decommissioned National Research Cyclotron Facility at Camperdown, NSW at a total cost of $17 million so it can be returned to the Sydney Local Health District.

The Committee received submissions, and conducted a public and private hearing in Newtown, Sydney. The Committee also had the opportunity to visit the facility in Camperdown, view the decommissioned cyclotron, and meet some of the staff that worked at the facility to support Australia’s position on the cutting edge of nuclear medicine research.

The Committee has recommended that the House of Representatives approve the proposed works. Mr Zappia said that ‘the National Research Cyclotron Facility provided significant value for the public through lifesaving research and medicine. The works to remove the facility, as opposed to repurposing it, will hopefully open the site to future public value in the city’s most populated local health district’.

Please note: the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Works is not involved in the tendering process, awarding of contracts or details of the proposed works. Enquiries on these matters should be directed to the relevant Commonwealth entities.

A Level Paying Field: Economics Committee releases report on the Australian payments sector

Australia's payments system is fundamental to the operation of the national economy. We have never had more ways to pay. As a nation of early adopters, Australians have been quick to embrace new payment technologies. However, global technology companies play an increasingly prominent yet opaque role in how Australians access and use payment services. Moving from cash to card has seen a massive shift within our payments system. On average Australians use a credit or debit card 540 times a year and non-cash payments worth nearly $300 billion are made every business day. The House of Representatives Standing Committee on…
