1 in 5 Tourists Arrive in Australia Dressed for the Wrong Season, New Survey Finds

Casinos Analyzer Australia 2 mins read

One in five tourists arrive in Australia dressed for an entirely different season, according to new research from Casinos Analyzer Australia.

The survey of 1,500 US and UK adults who have visited or plan to visit Australia found that confusion over the country's seasons is widespread and costly. Americans get it wrong noticeably more often than Brits — a pattern that runs through almost every question in the survey.

Key findings:

  • 19% of travellers packed for entirely the wrong season — 22% of Americans vs 16% of Brits

  • 44% have assumed Australia is "always hot and sunny"

  • 22% had to buy replacement clothes on arrival, spending an average of $95

  • 15% cut back on tours or other trip experiences to cover the cost

  • 12% booked an outdoor activity that turned out completely wrong for the weather

  • Only 58% correctly know it's winter in Australia right now — 52% of Americans vs 64% of Brits

The Great Suitcase Mix-Up

Australia's seasons run backwards to the northern hemisphere — when it's summer in the US and UK, it's winter down under. It sounds simple enough on paper, yet one in five visitors still turn up dressed for a season that isn't happening. Interestingly, this is one of the few areas where Brits pull ahead of their American counterparts: 16% packed wrong against 22% of Americans, suggesting a nation that checks the forecast obsessively is at least a little better prepared for a climate surprise. The confusion is rooted in a wider myth — 44% of travellers admit they've assumed Australia is "always hot and sunny," picturing a continent of endless beach days rather than one that experiences all four seasons in full.

A Packing Mistake That Hits the Holiday Budget

Realising your suitcase is wrong for the weather is one thing. Paying to fix it before you've even left the airport is another. Just over one in five travellers found themselves on an emergency shopping run straight off the plane, spending an average of $95 on clothes many already owned back home. The damage doesn't always stop at the till either — some cut back on tours, meals or nights out to cover the bill, while others were undone by the itinerary itself, booking a hike or a beach day that fell apart once the real weather showed up.

Why Australia’s Winter Still Catches Travellers Out

Asked directly what season it currently is in Australia, fewer than six in ten travellers got it right — and the gap between nations shows up here too. Just over half of Americans correctly named July as winter, compared with nearly two-thirds of Brits, suggesting a lifetime of talking about the weather has its practical uses after all.

Research conducted by Casinos Analyzer Australia in July 2026 among 1,500 US and UK adults who have visited or plan to visit Australia. Wardrobe and spending questions were asked of respondents who have visited Australia; geography and assumption questions were asked of the full sample.
