Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today confirmed Australia’s uranium will be the key that unlocks India's clean energy future.

Nuclear for Australia Founder Will Shackel welcomed the landmark agreement to facilitate uranium exports.

“To hear Prime Minister Albanese talk about uranium in the context of energy security and stability today was fantastic because that is the reality of what nuclear energy is.

“As Prime Minister Modi said, it’s our uranium that will help India reach its clean energy objectives. Indian nuclear energy powered by Australian uranium will be the safe, low emissions solution for a country with significant and growing energy demands.”

India has set an ambitious target to have 100GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047 and plans to add eighteen more nuclear reactors to its energy mix by 2032.

As the home to the world’s largest known uranium deposits, this makes Australia perfectly placed to capitalise on the increasing global interest in uranium to fuel nuclear energy.

But uranium mining is currently restricted in New South Wales, Western Australia and Queensland.

“The Labor Government has reiterated the benefit uranium exports can deliver for clean energy objectives – the next step is to open this same opportunity to Australians.

“The world is having a nuclear renaissance, thanks to the clean energy transition and the need for reliable, affordable baseload power.

“Nuclear is the key to ensuring the global clean energy transition does not restrict energy but make it more abundant.

“Australia needs to overturn its outdated nuclear bans so that we can not only fuel the global clean energy transition with Australian uranium but also consider how Australia itself could deploy nuclear as part of a clean energy grid.”

Australia’s uranium mining industry is currently led by South Australia. In May, the NSW Legislative Council historically voted in favour of a bill to lift the prohibition on nuclear energy and uranium mining in NSW.
