Could Your Garden Be North Sydney’s Best? Entries Open for the 2026 North Sydney Garden Competition

North Sydney Council 2 mins read

Open to residents, schools and community groups across the North Sydney local government area, the annual competition celebrates the creativity, care and environmental stewardship behind the area’s green spaces — no matter their size. With dedicated categories for balcony and courtyard gardens, apartment dwellers working with limited space and plenty of hard surfaces are just as much in the running as those with a sprawling backyard.

Open to gardeners of all experience levels, the competition shines a spotlight on the diverse ways people are transforming spaces across the North Sydney local government area.

This year's 11 categories span Balcony, Courtyard, Indoor and Children’s Gardens, Most Beautiful Garden, Native Habitat Gardens and separate Edible Gardens prizes for private growers and community groups producing food together. The prestigious Lex and Ruby Graham prizes recognise individuals and groups beautifying public spaces, and gardeners can enter the same garden in more than one category.

Returning judge Judith Sleijpen will also present the Judge’s Special Award for an entry showing exceptional creativity, innovation or excellence. She says the winning gardens will be the ones that spark joy.

“I'd love to know why your green space is important to you and if some plants bring you special times of enjoyment,” Ms Sleijpen said.

First-time gardeners are especially encouraged to enter, with judges recognising gardens of every size and style. Winners will be announced at the Garden Competition Awards Ceremony on Friday 25 September, with prizes including gardening tools and other garden-themed rewards.

Former fire chief: reject NSW’s biggest coal expansion

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEWEDNESDAY 15 JULY, 2026 One of Australia's foremost firefighting leaders has warned the proposedHunter Valley Operations coal expansion (HVO) is a climate bomb that threatens Australians with worsening fires, floods and heatwaves, as he calls on the NSW Independent Planning Commission to stop it from going ahead. Ahead of his appearance at the public hearing this week, Climate Councillor and former Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner Greg Mullins said: “What NSW exports as coal, we import back as bushfires, floods, heatwaves and droughts. Approving this climate bomb would put more Australians in harm's way. “I've spent more than…

Talent Alert: Experts available for interview on CSIRO GenCost Final 2025-26 Report

Wednesday 15 July For immediate release. CSIRO’s Final 2025-26 GenCost report, released today, has once again confirmed that renewables are the fastest and lowest-cost way to replace Australia’s ageing and unreliable coal power stations and cut climate pollution. Right now, data centre development is moving at break-neck speed, with 162 data centres operating and more than 90 new projects in the pipeline. Without better regulatory guardrails, data centres risk delaying our shift to what CSIRO has found is the lowest cost generation mix- wind and solar. We can't risk that happening. The data centre industry’s electricity demand over the next…
