Communities across New South Wales are invited to discover everything their local public library
has to offer when libraries across the state participate in Open Doors, Open Books, Open Minds on
Thursday 30 July.
Led by the NSW Public Libraries Association (NSWPLA), in partnership with the State Library of
New South Wales, the initiative is being embraced by almost all public library services across
metropolitan, regional and rural NSW.
Open Doors, Open Books, Open Minds celebrates the many ways public libraries enrich
community life, from supporting literacy and lifelong learning to fostering creativity, preserving local
history, promoting digital inclusion and providing welcoming spaces where everyone belongs.
Activities will vary from library to library and include behind-the-scenes tours, family activities,
technology demonstrations, author talks, local history displays, makerspace experiences,
exhibitions and opportunities to meet library staff and discover services that extend well beyond
borrowing books.
NSWPLA President Councillor Romola Hollywood said the day was an opportunity to celebrate one
of local government's greatest community assets.
"Public libraries are vibrant community hubs that connect people with knowledge, creativity,
technology and each other. Open Doors, Open Books, Open Minds is an invitation for everyone to
discover the extraordinary range of services their local library provides."
The campaign has been built around a collaborative statewide Champions Network, where library
staff have shared ideas, inspiration and resources to create locally relevant programs while
celebrating their shared commitment to serving communities across NSW.
The initiative is complemented by the State Library of New South Wales' Join Your Public Library
membership campaign, encouraging even more people to connect with their local library.
To recognise the outstanding work of participating libraries, NSWPLA will present the inaugural
Open Doors, Open Books, Open Minds Award, celebrating creativity, innovation and community
engagement.
Councillor Hollywood encouraged everyone to take the opportunity to visit their local library.
"Whether you're a lifelong library member or it's been years since your last visit, there's never been
a better time to rediscover your local library. We encourage everyone to come along on 30 July
and experience everything our public libraries have to offer."
