Sober Check 3 mins read
Key Facts:
  • Sober Check has launched a combined oral fluid and urine drug testing training course through its NZQA-registered training arm, Sober Check Training Limited, completing its full workplace training suite.
  • The integrated course allows participants to gain competency in both testing methods simultaneously, reducing time away from the workplace whilst earning nationally recognised NZQA qualifications recorded on their NZQA Record of Learning.
  • Successful participants receive the NZQA Level 4 Micro-credential in Oral Fluid Drug Screening and Collection alongside four unit standards covering both oral fluid and urine drug testing.
  • The combined format eliminates duplicated content — such as chain of custody requirements — that would otherwise be repeated across separate courses, and moves towards the integrated approach used in Australian accredited collector training.
  • Training is available virtually and in person, with further details available on the Sober Check website or by contacting Sober Check Training Limited on 0800 700 777 or [email protected].

Sober Check Expands Workplace Training with New Combined Drug Testing Training Course

MEDIA RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Date: Tuesday, 28th July 2026

New Zealand. Sober Check, New Zealand’s largest specialist in workplace drug and alcohol testing solutions, has launched a combined oral fluid and urine drug testing training course through Sober Check Training Limited, its NZQA-registered Private Training Establishment (PTE).

Following the recent launch of its NZQA-accredited urine drug testing training, the new combined programme provides organisations with a convenient way to develop competency across both testing methods through a single integrated course.

The combined programme completes Sober Check’s workplace training suite, which now includes oral fluid drug testing, urine drug testing, combined training, refresher training, and online product training, delivered through online, virtual, and in-person modes.

Why combined testing matters for New Zealand workplaces

Many New Zealand workplaces use both oral fluid and urine drug testing as part of their workplace drug and alcohol programme. Because each testing method serves a different purpose, organisations increasingly need testers who are competent in both.

Completing both methods through a single integrated course reduces time away from the workplace while providing learners with nationally recognised qualifications recorded on their NZQA Record of Learning. This provides employers with a practical way to manage workplace risks under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and build in-house capability while supporting workplace testing that aligns with oral fluid collection AS/NZS 4760:2019 and urine collection AS/NZS 4308:2023.

The course combines practical training in specimen collection, screening, documentation and compliance across both oral fluid and urine drug testing. On successful completion, participants gain the NZQA Level 4 Micro-credential in Oral Fluid Drug Screening and Collection, along with four unit standards recorded on their NZQA Record of Learning:

  • Oral fluid drug testing: Unit Standard 32327 (oral fluid screening) and Unit Standard 32328 (oral fluid collection)

  • Urine drug testing: Unit Standard 25458 (urine specimen collection) and Unit Standard 25511 (urine drug screening)

Training is available virtually and in person, with refresher training and online product training also available to support the correct use of Sober Check-purchased breathalysers and drug screening devices.

For Sober Check Australasia CEO, Louis Foster, managing workplace risk shouldn't be limited by gaps in your team's training, which is one of the key drivers behind the organisation's launch of this programme.

"Over the past year, we've continued to invest in our training capability because we know our customers are looking for practical training solutions that fit the way they operate," said Mr Foster.

“There is a lot of overlap between the oral fluid and urine unit standards, so that is why having combined courses is beneficial, because there's a lot of training that is duplicated by doing it separately, such as chain of custody requirements. The second thing is that providing this combined course brings us a step closer towards how accredited collector training is delivered in Australia, where urine, oral fluid, and alcohol testing is all delivered as part of one qualification.”
