When Victoria’s final electric vehicle incentive came to an end earlier this year, many expected demand for residential EV charger installations to slow down.
Instead, local electricians say homeowner interest has remained strong, with homeowners now viewing home charging as a long-term investment rather than a purchase dependent solely on government rebates.
According to business owner and electrical contractor Leonard Dibb of All Electrics in Melbourne, while the rebates may have ended, interest in home EV chargers continues to grow strongly.
Consumer trends show that the financial benefits of installing an EV home charger today outweigh the initial costs.
VIC EV Adoption Eclipses Public Charging Infrastructure
According to the Electric Vehicle Council’s annual reports, there are at least 600+ public EV charging stations in Victoria alone.
Yet, recent figures for EV adoption in Victoria also reveal that there are over 180,000 registered EVs in the state, meaning that for every 1 of those 600 charging stations, there are an estimated 300 drivers waiting to charge their vehicle.
The rate of electric vehicle adoption, both in Victoria and nationally, is outpacing the development of public charging infrastructure, and while governments aim to address the gap, drivers are resolving the inconvenience by installing private charging stations at home.
Long-Term Value Pushes Home EV Chargers over Rebates
Victoria previously offered several incentives to encourage greater electric vehicle adoption, including grants to expand charging infrastructure and the former Zero Emissions Vehicle Subsidy.
While these programs have now concluded, the transition to EVs continues as more households weigh long-term benefits against upfront purchase costs.
“There is definitely less incentive for some people,” Leonard explained, “[but] countered with high fuel prices, convenience, and battery storage rebates, the long-term cost value and energy savings of home EV charging stations becomes readily apparent.”
EV Home Chargers & Rooftop Solar Leading Property Futureproofing
Following updates to the National Construction Code in May 2024 calling for ‘EV-ready infrastructure’ across all new residential building projects, home EV charging stations are also being regarded as a foundational component of property futureproofing.
More Victorian homeowners are investing in EV charger installation to boost the resale value of their properties, recognising growing consumer demand for access to private charging stations.
Dibb’s observations across EV charger installations for residential developments even report a growing demand for retrofit EV charging solutions for existing properties statewide that predate the NCC 2024 amendments.
Consistent demand across both new and existing builds speaks to consumer sentiments surrounding the value of EV charging stations both for convenience today and value tomorrow.
“EV charging is the future,” he explained. “It will only improve over time; how quickly depends on manufacturing, the health of the economy, and big improvements in the ability for manufacturers to revamp an older model to help resale value.”
“As the technology improves, so does the ease of installation and return on investment.”
