Prime Minister Anthony Albanese should apologise to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi for his smutty “melons” remarks and gestures — or resign, Family First National Director Lyle Shelton says.
Family First called for Mr Albanese to apologise more than a month ago, on July 8, saying his conduct towards the leader of one of Australia’s most important allies was demeaning to women and beneath the office of Prime Minister.
“More than a month later, Mr Albanese is still refusing to apologise,” Mr Shelton said.
“Mr Albanese won’t always have Chris Minns on hand to save him,” Mr Shelton said in a reference to the NSW Premier’s intervention at a media conference this morning.
“The Prime Minister has had every opportunity to simply say sorry. Instead, he continues to insist there was nothing sexual about his remarks and gestures.
“If he cannot bring himself to apologise for conduct which has brought the office of Prime Minister into disrepute, he should resign.”
