Legal Aid NSW has announced a new joint internship opportunity with UNSW Law & Justice aimed at building interest in regional legal practice among future lawyers.
The six three-week internships in Broken Hill, Dubbo and Wagga Wagga are a unique opportunity for students to get hands-on experience while supporting regional communities.
Associate Director Steven Wright said the program was an outstanding opportunity for students to see what it’s like to work as a lawyer in a regional area.
“This is a rare opportunity for students to upskill and learn from Legal Aid NSW while enjoying the benefits of life in regional NSW and the diverse and complex casework in the regions,” he said.
“Students will gain practical experience across a broad range of legal matters, work closely with experienced solicitors and see firsthand the important role Legal Aid NSW plays in supporting local communities.”
“The internship also provides valuable insight into the unique challenges and rewards of regional legal practice, we hope it will encourage people to work in the regions.”
Professor Andrew Lynch, Dean, UNSW Law & Justice, said the internship reflected the Faculty's commitment to preparing students for meaningful and impactful legal careers.
“This partnership with Legal Aid NSW gives our students a unique opportunity to develop practical legal skills while contributing to improved access to justice in regional communities,” Professor Lynch said.
“Students will gain invaluable firsthand experience working alongside dedicated practitioners, deepen their understanding of the legal needs of regional communities and explore the rewarding career opportunities available outside metropolitan centres.”

The internship is open to LLB and JD students who will be in their penultimate or final year in 2027 and placements will occur during summer for three weeks commencing on 18 January.
UNSW Law & Justice will provide each student with $4,000 to support living expenses for the duration of the placement, however, students are responsible for organising their own travel and accommodation.
