Climate 200 in Newcastle today to meet supporters

Thursday 6 August 2026

Climate 200 founder Simon Holmes à Court, Co-Convenor Kate Hook and Executive Director Byron Fay are in Newcastle today to meet with supporters and discuss how the community-independents movement is delivering policy wins on climate, corruption, and gender-equity.

Climate 200 enjoys significant support from the Hunter community, with around 500 supporters locally and over 250 people RSVPd for its local event tonight.

Climate 200 founder Simon Holmes à Court said today that he was looking forward to the function this evening.

“Our movement is growing, in the cities and in the regions.  We have groups forming all over Australia all the time, looking to change politics in this country.

“People want to understand more about the community-driven model that’s delivered independent MPs like David Pocock, Sophie Scamps and Helen Haines, who can push on issues that change lives but the major parties won’t touch.’

“We now have over 35,000 supporters across Australia.

“Newcastle is a genuine Aussie icon and a widely loved regional city. It is a community in transition, from the largest coal port in the world to a tech and cultural hub.  Newcastle is forging a new path, different from its past and embracing of a cleaner, safer future.

“We are here simply to say “thank you” to our local supporters, hear from them about their concerns and discuss our broader progress nationally.”

Simon Holmes à Court, Kate Hook and Byron Fay are available for media comment today.  Please call Kate Hook on 0400 258 211
