Robotics expert Professor Dana Kulić is available to discuss the future of human-robot collaboration following the publication of a Comment paper in Nature Electronics, led by Professor Kulić in collaboration with researchers from CSIRO.
The paper, Human–robot teams depend on alignment, examines why communication and shared understanding will be critical as robots become more capable and increasingly work alongside people in complex, real-world environments.

“If robots are going to work alongside people in everyday settings, they need to be not only capable, but understandable, responsive and adaptable.
“Robots are becoming more capable, but the challenge is making sure humans and robots can work together effectively.
“As robots move into more complex environments, people need to understand what a robot can do, what it cannot do, and when it needs help.
“Communication is central to this. The right information needs to reach people at the right time, without overwhelming them.
“That communication can take many forms – from traditional interfaces and explanations to a robot’s movements, sounds or requests for assistance.
“Even experienced robot operators can be surprised by autonomous systems in complex environments. Greater autonomy does not automatically mean easier teamwork.
“Humans bring contextual knowledge, judgement and an understanding of situations that robots may not have. Robots can provide autonomy, perception and decision-making capabilities that extend what people can do.
“The key is keeping humans and robots aligned as their capabilities, roles and environments change.”
