Peaceful Protest Calling for Action on Tibet
Melbourne – 3 August 2026: The Tibetan Community of Australia (Victoria) will hold a peaceful protest outside the Chinese Consulate on Monday, 3 August 2026, calling for greater international attention to human rights concerns in Tibet, the protection of Tibetan language, culture and identity, and the release of the Panchen Lama.
The demonstration will honour independence activist, Lobga Rangzen, whose death has become a symbol for many Tibetans advocating for freedom and human rights and raise concerns about China's so-called ‘Ethnic Unity and Progress Law’, which came into effect on 1 July 2026, and which Tibetans and human rights advocates warn, contributes to policies that threaten Tibetan language, culture, religion and identity.
On Thursday, July 2, 2026, 52-year-old Tibetan independence activist Lobsang Palden (widely known as Lobga Rangzen) live-streamed his self-immolation in front of the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, in what is being regarded as a final act of peaceful protest against China’s continued repressive policies in Tibet.
His death is the first known Tibetan self-immolation in the United States and the first documented outside India, Nepal, and occupied Tibet.
“To date, 170 Tibetans have self-immolated in protest against Chinese rule, with 157 of those self-immolations taking place inside Tibet. This clearly reflects the severity of repression Tibetans face under the Chinese government’s policies,” said President of the Tibetan Community in Victoria.
Last month, President of the Central Tibetan Administration, Sikyong Penpa Tsering, expressed deep sorrow over the self-immolation of the Tibetan activist, urgently calling on Tibetans in exile, world governments, and international human rights institutions to recognise the severe crisis inside Tibet.
“While we honour his devotion, human life is precious and must be preserved to serve the long-term struggle for Tibet," said President of the Central Tibetan Administration, Sikyong Penpa Tsering in July.
"The unfolding genocide inside Tibet and the enforcement of the draconian ‘Ethnic Unity and Progress Law’ on 1 July are what drove Lobga Rangzen to this tragic decision. He joins at least 157 Tibetans inside Tibet who have offered their lives to draw global attention to the brutal repression endured under Chinese rule.

The Tibetan community in Australia respectfully calls on the United Nations, the Australian Government and the international community to support universal human rights, cultural preservation, peaceful dialogue and greater transparency regarding Tibet.

Background
After His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the Panchen Lama is one of the most important figures in Tibetan Buddhism and the world’s youngest political prisoner. On 17 May 1995, six-year-old Gedhun Choekyi Nyima was kidnapped by the Chinese authorities, three days after being recognised as the 11th Panchen Lama. The Chinese government has refused to divulge any substantive information on his whereabouts and well-being for the past 30 years.
