Legendary Arnhem Land rock group Wirriŋga Band will bring its distinctive sound and decades of musical history to Charles Darwin University’s (CDU) Casuarina Open Day.
Travelling from Milingimbi in northeast Arnhem Land, the band will perform at Casuarina campus as part of a series of shows in Darwin.
Wirriŋga Band was formed in 1979, when frontman Keith Lapulung was 19 years old. Now 66, Mr Lapulung said the group remained committed to sharing its music and encouraging the next generation of First Nations artists.
“Our goal is to inspire people, especially young First Nations artists from remote communities, to take their music to the next level,” Mr Lapulung said.
“We also hope our performance encourages more people to engage First Nations bands. There are many great bands that are not yet well known across the rest of the country.”
The band will join renowned scientist, author and broadcaster Dr Karl Kruszelnicki as a headline attraction at Casuarina Open Day on Saturday 8 August.
Dr Karl will give visitors the opportunity to explore the wonders of science and have their questions answered by one of Australia’s most recognisable science communicators.
CDU Interim Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Fiona Coulson said Open Day would showcase the many ways education, creativity and curiosity could shape a person’s future.
“Open Day is more than an opportunity to tour the campus. It is a chance for people to discover new interests, explore potential careers and imagine where education might take them,” Professor Coulson said.
“For decades, Wirriŋga Band has encouraged young people in remote communities to express themselves through music, while Dr Karl has helped generations of Australians see the excitement and possibilities of science.
“It is fitting to welcome them both to a university that is deeply connected to the communities of the Northern Territory and committed to helping students turn their interests and creative passions into meaningful careers.”
Casuarina Open Day will give prospective students and the wider Top End community the opportunity to explore study and career options, tour CDU’s facilities, meet academics and students, and take part in a program of demonstrations, entertainment and interactive activities.
CDU Casuarina Open Day will be held on Saturday 8 August from 10 am to 4 pm.
