Amazon and ANZA Power Sign First Standalone Battery Storage Tolling Agreement in Asia Pacific

  • Landmark agreement will support the development of a 50 MW / 200 MWh standalone battery energy storage system in Victoria
  • It’s Anza's seventh energy agreement signed since launching the platform in January 2026

2 September 2026, Sydney - Anza today announced the signing of a tolling agreement with Amazon for the Bairnsdale Battery Energy Storage System (“BESS”) in East Gippsland, Victoria. The agreement represents Amazon’s first standalone battery storage tolling agreement globally and is the first-of-its-kind arrangement in Australia for a non-energy business. Unlike a co-located battery, the Bairnsdale BESS will connect directly to the electricity grid as a standalone asset, providing dedicated storage capacity independent of a solar or wind farm.

The Bairnsdale BESS will deliver 50 MW of AC capacity and 200 MWh of energy storage to the National Electricity Market. The agreement will help strengthen regional grid reliability and energy flexibility, enabling electricity to be stored and dispatched during periods of peak demand. In doing so, it will support greater penetration of renewables across the grid while enhancing system stability and represents a key step in Anza’s commitment to delivering dispatchable, low-carbon energy.

Carlo Frigerio, Chief Executive Officer of Anza, said:

“Signing Amazon’s first standalone battery storage tolling agreement is an important milestone for Anza Power and reflects the growing demand from major energy purchasers for dedicated storage solutions that support a reliable, low-carbon grid. Bairnsdale demonstrates our ability to deliver flexible energy infrastructure that respond to the evolving needs of both the market and our customers. We look forward to building on the momentum we have established since launching Anza earlier this year.”

Bairnsdale is part of Anza's diversified development strategy across Australia and New Zealand, spanning standalone battery storage, solar-plus-storage and other integrated energy solutions. This flexible approach allows Anza to tailor projects to local market conditions and customer requirements while helping address the growing need for firming capacity and grid flexibility.

This agreement builds on Anza’s existing relationship with Amazon. In April 2026, Amazon announced nine additional renewable energy deals across New South Wales and Victoria, including five solar-plus-battery storage Power Purchasing Agreements (PPAs) with Anza. It also follows Anza's first New Zealand offtake agreement, signed in June 2026 with Fonterra through a long-term virtual PPA covering 80% of the output from the 42MWdc Somerton Solar Farm in Canterbury. Together with Bairnsdale, Anza has now signed seven energy agreements since its launch in January 2026.

Anza is backed by I Squared Capital, a leading global infrastructure investor and benefits from its broader Asia-Pacific energy and infrastructure platform. Across the region, I Squared is investing in the critical grid infrastructure needed to support rising electricity demand and enable the energy transition, with pan-Asian experience in utility-scale battery storage spanning more than 20 projects. Across I Squared-backed platforms, this includes approximately 2.1 GWh of battery storage in Japan, 809 MWh in India, 520 MWh in Australia and 192 MWh in Taiwan. This regional scale and experience provide Anza with access to deep expertise in the development, financing, construction and operation of grid-scale energy storage assets.

Talent Alert: Backwards step on electric buses: Crisafulli Government continues to put business interest ahead of its own people in fuel crisis

Wednesday 2 September - for immediate release Yesterday, the Crisafulli Government announced it was taking a step backwards for Queenslanders. In signing Queenslanders up for 630 more diesel buses, the QLD Government has signed Queenslanders up for more exposure to expensive global oil price spikes and more climate pollution. Australia imports more than 90% of our refined fuel. With the Queensland Government committing to expensive, noisy and polluting public transport, Queensland residents will stay exposed to global fossil fuel crises. A better solution is for the Crisafulli Government to diversify away from petrol and diesel, by expanding renewable energy and…

Queensland families don’t want 630 more diesel buses, say parents, as Crisafulli Government takes state backwards

Wednesday 2 September 2026 Parents for Climate has condemned the Queensland Government's decision to abandon its zero-emissions bus program in favour of up to 630 diesel buses, warning the move locks in decades of harmful pollution and risky fuel dependence while the rest of the country moves toward cleaner options. Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg this week confirmed the entire new fleet would run on diesel instead of being electric, in a program expected to cost in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Parents for Climate CEO Nic Seton said the decision failed Queensland families on health, cost and climate grounds.…
