AusBiotech, the peak industry body for life sciences, is celebrating its 40-year anniversary.
The special milestone was recognised at an event in Parliament House Canberra on Monday among Ministers, parliamentarians and a cross section of members comprising leading medical science innovators, entrepreneurs, and investors.
Guests included Industry and Innovation Minister Tim Ayres, Health and Ageing Minister Mark Butler, Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy Andrew Chartlon, Shadow Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation Aaron Violi, House Speaker Milton Dick and several cross-party MPs, Senators and 60 AusBiotech members.
AusBiotech CEO Rebekah Cassidy said the important anniversary reflects the industry’s continued growth and success.
“From humble beginnings with fewer than 100 members in the 1980s, AusBiotech has grown to be a thriving, well-connected community of more than 3,500 members,” Ms Cassidy said.
“Our industry is a major economic contributor, accounting for more than 350,000 jobs across Australia, and has doubled in size since 2017. Cumulatively, since 2016, the biotech industry has been our greatest value-add export industry outside of primary industries, making it key to Australia’s diversified economy.
“The event was a wonderful opportunity to promote the importance of the biotech, health tech and medtech industry to our nation's health and economy.
“It also served as a poignant reminder of the need for the government and industry to continue working closely together, to ensure our vibrant industry remains strong.
“We are very grateful to our thousands of members who work tirelessly in the pursuit of scientific excellence. Our membership is diverse but united in its dedication and commitment to saving lives and improving patient outcomes.
“I also thank the AusBiotech Board, including our Chair Dr James Campbell, for its leadership and vision.
“We sincerely thank all those who attended and shared this special occasion with us.
“We look forward to celebrating this milestone further, with more of our members and the wider sector, at a major 40th Anniversary Gala Dinner, to be held in October during Australia’s Biggest Week in Biotech.”
