Family First is calling on the Albanese Government to ban the Muslim Brotherhood in Australia, backing a proposal put forward by leading British historian Lord Andrew Roberts in Sydney this week.
Family First National Director and NSW Legislative Council candidate Lyle Shelton said Lord Roberts’ address to the Centre for Independent Studies’ annual Gala Dinner provided a timely warning about the ideological forces fuelling antisemitism in Western democracies.
“Lord Roberts is right. Australia should ban the Muslim Brotherhood and investigate its networks, affiliates and influence in this country,” Mr Shelton said.
In his address, Lord Roberts said governments needed to confront organisations he believes are contributing to Islamist extremism and antisemitism.
“The government … needs to ban the Muslim Brotherhood and its network of companies, charities, NGOs and media outlets,” he said.
Lord Roberts described the Brotherhood as “the world’s largest jihadi organisation” and argued that allowing it and associated networks to operate unchecked was incompatible with a serious campaign against antisemitism.
“After everything Australia has experienced since October 7 and the Bondi massacre, there can be no more complacency about radical Islam,” Mr Shelton said.
“Family First has previously called for the Muslim Brotherhood to be banned. Lord Roberts’ intervention adds weight to the case for the Federal Government and our security agencies to urgently examine the Brotherhood and its Australian networks.
“The Government should immediately task ASIO and the relevant security agencies with examining the Muslim Brotherhood and organisations linked to it against Australia’s legal thresholds, with a view to banning the organisation and disrupting its networks,” Mr Shelton said.
Lord Roberts outlined a wider suite of measures deserving consideration, including action against extremist propaganda, greater scrutiny of overseas influence and funding, tougher responses to incitement to violence, support for moderate Muslim voices and rigorous inspection of Islamic-school curricula to ensure antisemitism is not being taught.
