INTERVIEW AVAILABLE: Is workplace glare the safety hazard hiding in plain sight?

Carve 2 mins read

When we think about workplace safety, glare probably isn’t the first hazard that comes to mind.

But for workers spending long hours on construction sites, metal roofs, transport infrastructure, mines and other highly reflective environments, excessive glare can contribute to eye strain, headaches, fatigue and reduced visual accuracy. Workers are also constantly moving between full sun, shade and indoor environments, meaning the same lens may not always perform well across an entire shift.

It’s prompting a broader rethink of safety eyewear and whether simply meeting the required standard is enough.

Australian eyewear brand CARVE, which has spent more than 25 years designing eyewear for surf, snow, motorsport and outdoor environments, is now applying that performance-led thinking to workplace safety. Its safety range uses different lens technologies for conditions including glare, low light and changing indoor/outdoor environments.

CARVE Founder and Director Matt Whyte is available to discuss:

  • why glare and visual fatigue deserve more attention as workplace safety issues
  • why one safety lens doesn’t necessarily suit every work environment
  • what workers should actually look for when choosing safety eyewear
  • how technology traditionally used in performance sports is making its way into PPE
  • why safety eyewear is moving beyond basic compliance towards comfort and visual performance

CARVE has also recently introduced a G15 green lens to its Volley safety eyewear range. Originally developed for aviation applications, the lens is designed for bright outdoor conditions and blocks 85% of incoming visible light while maintaining natural colour perception and contrast.

Would this be of interest for an upcoming workplace safety, construction or trade feature? Happy to arrange an interview with Matt or send through imagery and further information.

Best,
Vanessa
