FolioFox, a Melbourne-based commercial book printer, will co-sponsor a panel on small press publishing and host a stall at this year’s National Writers’ Conference (NWC), the centrepiece event of the Emerging Writers’ Festival (EWF), running Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September at The Wheeler Centre in Melbourne’s CBD.
Presented in partnership with Australian publishing company Tellwell Publishing, the panel Submit, Sign or Start a Small Press, will run from 11.30am to 12.30pm on Saturday 12 September. It brings together four industry voices to explore small press publishing and assisted self-publishing as pathways for authors to bring their work to life:
-
Katherine Day, former trade editor, Writers Victoria mentor and Senior Lecturer in Publishing Studies at the University of Melbourne
-
Phil Day, book designer and poetry editor
-
Ashleigh Hartley, Publishing Consultant at Tellwell Publishing
-
Henry Neilsen, speculative fiction author, musician and Vice President of Meridian Australis
Throughout the conference weekend, FolioFox will also run a stall giving writers a first-hand look at the book printing process. Visitors can ask questions about printing their own self-published book, get a quote on their printing project, browse book printing samples, and pick up freebies including bookmarks and papercraft projects.
“The important role of small presses in Australia’s publishing landscape is often overlooked, and so a group of industry experts are teaming up to demystify the behind-the-scenes of what small presses do and how they can help emerging or self-published authors get their work seen,” says FolioFox Brand Manager, Tracy Yong.
Now in its landmark year, the National Writers’ Conference is designed to help emerging writers sharpen their craft, learn from industry experts, network with publishing professionals and connect with fellow writers. FolioFox’s involvement reflects its focus on making professional book printing more accessible to independent and self-published authors.
Tickets to the full conference programme are available as a weekend pass, which includes entry to the Submit, Sign or Start a Small Press panel and all other NWC sessions across the weekend. Single tickets to the panel are also available for those wanting to attend just that session; a ticket is not required for anyone who already holds a full NWC pass.
