New Victorian data centre rules set the bar for NSW election contest

Nature Conservation Council NSW < 1 min read

22 September 2026

The Nature Conservation Council of NSW (NCC), the state’s leading environmental advocacy organisation, has pushed the NSW Government to step up on data centre regulation after the Victorian Government released their Sustainable Data Centre Action Plan.

The Plan aims to protect neighbourhoods from unsustainable data centres.

"Victorian data centres now must comply with minimum standards,” said Dr Brad Smith, Policy and Advocacy Director for NCC.

"Victoria's mandatory rules will protect energy and water supplies, and make sure noisy, polluting data centres don't open up right next to schools and homes.

"The question is, why are NSW standards optional?

"Why is Premier Minns allowing inappropriate data centre developments to industrialise residential communities, push up power prices, and drain our water supplies?

"In NSW, data centres like the three proposals in Lane Cove risk flooding homes and nature habitat with noise, diesel, and light pollution.

"We're calling on all parties and candidates to commit to mandatory rules for data centres in NSW.”

Terrifying projections of environmentally destructive population expansion of 39 million people for Australia

Each population projection since Australia’s firstIntergenerational Report in 2002 has significantly under called the outcome. Sustainable Population Australia (SPA) has no confidence that the latest effort will alter that track record. The report projects expansion of 11 million by 2065, lifting population to 39 million people. SPA says such an outcome would be disastrous for the biophysical environment that supports all life on the continent. SPA experts are available for further comment. Albanese’s NY Climate Week address acknowledges scale of the climate challenge, but fossil fuels notably absent

SYDNEY, Tuesday 22 September 2026 — In response to Prime Minister Albanese’s keynote address at New York Climate Week, Dr Simon Bradshaw, COP31 Lead and climate expert at Greenpeace Australia Pacific, said: “It is encouraging to see Prime Minister Anthony Albanese acknowledging the immediate and profound climate threat to communities in the Pacific, Australia and worldwide, and the need to work together, with bravery and compassion. Now we must match those words with real action to phase out fossil fuels. “Earlier this month in Palau, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese committed Australia to helping accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels…
