NSW & ACT leading GPs and practices recognised at RACGP awards

The Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) has honoured some of the state's most outstanding general practitioners, practices, supervisors and doctors in training at the RACGP NSW and ACT Faculty Awards, recognising excellence in patient care, education, leadership and community service. 

RACGP NSW and ACT Chair Dr Rebekah Hoffman congratulated all award recipients, acknowledging their significant contributions to their patients, communities and the future of general practice. 

"These awards celebrate the extraordinary GPs, practices and GP educators who go above and beyond every day to provide high-quality care for their communities," Dr Hoffman said. 

"General practice is the foundation of Australia's healthcare system, and these award winners exemplify the compassion, leadership, innovation and commitment that make such a difference in people's lives." 

GP of the Year: Dr Michael Samy Malek 

Dr Malek was named GP of the Year in recognition of his outstanding dedication to general practice and his commitment to serving the diverse needs of his community. 

Known for his belief that communication is one of the most important tools in clinical care, Dr Malek has led initiatives including free influenza vaccination programs and support for Aboriginal and culturally and linguistically diverse communities. He is also highly regarded as an educator, creating resources to help develop consultation skills among future GPs. 

"Dr Malek's commitment to his patients, his community and the next generation of GPs makes him a worthy recipient of this award," Dr Hoffman said. 

General Practice of the Year: Forest Family Practice 

Forest Family Practice received General Practice of the Year for its collaborative and community-focused approach to healthcare. 

The practice works closely with local Primary Health Networks to provide after-hours services and contraceptive care, actively supports Aboriginal preventive health initiatives and fosters strong relationships with local specialists to improve patient care. Its commitment to teaching, professional development and community charities further distinguished the practice. 

"Forest Family Practice demonstrates the vital role general practices play in supporting the health and wellbeing of entire communities," Dr Hoffman said. 

GP Supervisor of the Year: Dr Charbel Badr 

Dr Badr was recognised as GP Supervisor of the Year for his exceptional dedication to mentoring and educating future GPs. 

Respected by registrars, colleagues and practice staff alike, Dr Badr provides structured clinical and examination teaching while also contributing to university education and general practice research. His commitment to supporting trainees has earned strong praise from those he mentors. 

"Outstanding supervisors play a crucial role in shaping the future GP workforce, and Dr Badr's dedication to education and mentorship is making a lasting impact," Dr Hoffman said. 

GP in Training of the Year: Dr Ben Reynolds 

Dr Reynolds was awarded GP in Training of the Year for his commitment to rural and Aboriginal health and his passion for improving access to care in underserved communities. 

Through his willingness to relocate to rural communities and his focus on preventive healthcare, Dr Reynolds has demonstrated a strong commitment to addressing healthcare inequities and ensuring patients can access quality care close to home. 

"Dr Reynolds represents the future of general practice, showing remarkable dedication to rural communities and a passion for improving health outcomes where care is needed most," Dr Hoffman said. 

Dr Hoffman said all award recipients reflected the strength of general practice across NSW and the ACT. 

"Whether caring for patients, mentoring future doctors, supporting their local community or innovating to improve access to care, these award winners embody the very best of our profession," she said.
