A new analysis prices a full whale-watching weekend for two adults across nine of Australia's best-known coastal destinations. Sydney tops the table at $811, while Hervey Bay — the destination synonymous with whale-watching — comes out cheapest of all, despite charging the highest cruise fare in the country.
As humpback whales and their calves move south along the coast on the final stretch of the migration, a new analysis from Casinos Analyzer Australia reveals that the destination most Australians associate with whale-watching is in fact the cheapest place to do it.
Casinos Analyzer Australia, an online casino review platform, priced a full whale-watching weekend for two adults — cruise tickets, accommodation, and park or ferry access — across nine coastal destinations in four states, from Western Australia's Albany to the Queensland coast. Every figure was drawn from operator booking systems and real listings captured on 24 September 2026, for the weekend of 16 to 18 October.
What a whale weekend costs
- Sydney (Manly), NSW — $811. The most expensive destination of the nine. Accommodation alone runs $596 for two nights, more than the entire weekend costs in five other destinations, and Captain Cook Cruises charges $105 per adult once the compulsory fuel surcharge is added.
- Byron Bay, NSW — $715. Cruise tickets of $129 per adult are among the highest in the study. Cape Byron is also the one destination charging by the hour rather than the day, at $10 in the lighthouse precinct.
- Albany, WA — $694. The only Western Australian destination in the comparison, on cruise tickets of $130 per adult and accommodation of $417. The season there closes at the end of October.
- North Stradbroke Island, QLD — $687. Whale-watching is free, as Point Lookout is shore-based and no commercial operator runs from the island. Accommodation of $647 is the highest of the nine, and a return passenger ferry adds $40 for two.
- Eden, NSW — $590. An $85 cruise from the old whaling port keeps the weekend below $600, and the town runs its Whale Festival in October.
- Port Stephens (Nelson Bay), NSW — $588. Accommodation of $410, a three-hour cruise at $89 per adult and no entry fee at Tomaree National Park place it just $2 behind Eden.
- Jervis Bay (Huskisson), NSW — $556. The cheapest New South Wales weekend in the study, with accommodation at $366 and cruise tickets at $85 per adult, plus Booderee National Park entry.
- Victor Harbor, SA — $550. An $85 boat tour from the Granite Island Causeway delivers the second-lowest total. Timing is the trade-off, as mid-October falls after South Australia's main whale-watching period and sightings are less reliable.
- Hervey Bay, QLD — $517. The cheapest weekend of the nine, despite the most expensive cruise ticket in the country at $133 per adult. Accommodation of $251 more than covers the premium on the water. The weekend is also the last of the season there, with operators finishing on 18 October.
The full ranking, for two adults over two nights, reveals a second, subtler finding: the cost of the boat has almost nothing to do with the cost of the weekend. Hervey Bay charges the most to get on the water and finishes cheapest overall, while North Stradbroke Island charges nothing at all and still lands fourth. On an average bill of $634, or roughly $317 per person, it is where travellers sleep that decides what they pay.
Where the money goes
Accommodation is the highest cost in every destination and the widest-ranging, from $251 in Hervey Bay to $647 on North Stradbroke Island, a spread of $396 across two nights. Cruise tickets for two adults run from nothing at all, where viewing is shore-based, to $266 in Hervey Bay. Access charges are the smallest component and the most varied in kind, from no fee at Tomaree, Granite Island and Hervey Bay, through $5 at Sydney's North Head and $20 at Booderee National Park, to $40 for the return passenger ferry to North Stradbroke Island.
Timing narrows through October. Hervey Bay closes its 2026 season on 18 October, Albany's runs to the end of the month and Byron Bay's ends in late October or early November. Mid-October also falls within calf season on the southern migration, when mothers and young travel closer to shore, a pattern reported by operators at Jervis Bay, Point Lookout and Albany.
Methodology
The analysis priced a two-night whale-watching weekend for two adults across nine Australian coastal destinations. Cruise costs use the adult retail fare published by operators or their live booking systems, including any compulsory surcharge and excluding promotional pricing. Accommodation is the median price of an entire place on Airbnb for the nights of 16 to 18 October 2026, from a sample of 18 to 24 listings per destination, inclusive of all fees. Access covers national park entry or ferry travel where applicable; Cape Byron is charged hourly and two hours in the lighthouse precinct were assumed, and North Stradbroke Island is costed on the SeaLink passenger ferry rather than the vehicle ferry. North Stradbroke Island has no commercial cruise operator, so viewing there is shore-based and the ticket cost is zero. Sydney is priced on the coastal suburb of Manly rather than the city as a whole. Fuel and food are excluded, as the destinations are served by different capital cities and distance from the nearest city would make comparison across states misleading.
