The Joint Committee of Public Accounts and Audit has today tabled Report 519: Inquiry into the administration of the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
The National Disability Insurance Scheme has been one of Australia’s most significant public policy reforms. It plays a critical role in supporting and improving the lives of people with permanent and significant disability. It is a cherished national institution and has changed lives for the better.
The purpose of the Committee’s inquiry was threefold: to examine the National Disability Insurance Agency’s management of financial sustainability risks and compliance with claim requirements; to investigate the regulatory performance of the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission; and to scrutinise the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing’s policy advice to the government.
Chair of the Committee, Mr Josh Burns MP, said, “while the NDIS will continue to grow, it is imperative that the long-term sustainability is not put at risk. The Committee wanted to ensure the agencies responsible for ensuring the sustainability of the NDIS were performing their functions effectively.”
The Committee found that this was not always the case and made fourteen recommendations to the NDIA Board, the NDIA, and the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.
