CLEAN AIR GUIDELINES STRENGTHENED FOR INDUSTRY

NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) < 1 min read

Stronger protections are in place to ensure industry prioritises clean air and healthy communities after a major refresh of the methods used to model and assess air pollutants in NSW.

The Approved Methods for the Modelling and Assessment of Air Pollutants have been updated following an extensive scientific review and public consultation led by the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) earlier this year.

The Approved Methods are used by industry and councils when modelling air quality impacts from sites such as mines, power stations, landfills and other industrial activities.

EPA Executive Director of Regulatory Practice and Services Emma Whale said the modernised methods provide stronger thresholds to protect local air quality from industrial activities.

“The EPA undertook a major review to ensure the Approved Methods reflect the latest science and health-based evidence,” Ms Whale said.

“The updated Methods bring in clear triggers for when additional controls are needed to reduce pollutants, while simplifying assessment pathways for low-risk sites.

“They encourage industry to use site-specific data so they can accurately model the impact their facility has on the surrounding environment.

“This will provide a better understanding of local conditions and inform appropriate measures for managing dust, odour and other air pollutants.

“The new methods also respond to community concerns by providing specific guidance on fugitive dust from sites like mines and quarries and bringing in clearer requirements for dust control.”

As part of the review process, the EPA held discussions with a wide range of air quality consultants, health experts and industry representatives as well as community groups.

The updated Approved Methods will be used for all relevant new developments and for modifications of existing sites across the state.

Sharing infrastructure and coordinating energy use could halve industrial electricity costs

Heavy industry could slash electricity costs by up to 50 per cent by sharing renewable infrastructure and coordinating how it uses power, new modelling has found. The new report by Monash University’s Climateworks Centre – welcomed by leading industry groups – points to a radical rethink of how Australia’s industrial regions make the transition to clean energy. Instead of companies building their own renewable generation, batteries and supporting infrastructure, industries could share infrastructure and coordinate when and how they use electricity. The result is a cheaper, cleaner and more efficient energy system. The report modelled two pathways: one where industries…

Australian Government “falls short of the bold leadership it promised” at Pre-COP

Reacting to the inadequate Australian funding commitments at Pre-COP in the Pacific this week, Oxfam Australia’s Chief Executive, Jennifer Tierney said: “For Australian leaders to leave Pre-COP without a single substantial funding pledge is irresponsible, and falls short of the bold leadership it promised. “The projects announced this week do not represent new climate finance. Repackaging previously committed funding as new announcements is simply not good enough. What Pacific communities need is genuine additional finance that reflects the scale and urgency of the climate crisis they are dealing with- losing homes, livelihoods and lives as disasters worsen. “Australia spends ten…
