EduMarking Releases Playground Lesson Plan Guide as Schools Seek Outdoor Curriculum Delivery

EduMarking 3 mins read
Key Facts:
  • EduMarking, an Australian playground marking supplier, has released a free Playground Lesson Plan Guide to help primary school teachers use outdoor markings to deliver literacy and numeracy outcomes during recess and lunch breaks.
  • The guide covers twelve lesson frameworks tied to Australian Curriculum content descriptors for Foundation to Year 6, designed to be completed during a standard recess or lunch period with minimal teacher facilitation.
  • The company has observed a shift in enquiries, with classroom teachers and curriculum coordinators increasingly driving interest, rather than the principals and facilities managers who historically led purchasing decisions.
  • Research supports the approach, including a 2025 NSW study finding that two hours per week of outdoor play-based activity produced no negative impact on literacy or numeracy outcomes, addressing a common concern raised against outdoor learning.
  • EduMarking argues that as students already spend 30 to 40% of their school day in the playground during breaks, curriculum-aligned markings such as number grids, alphabet trails, and multiplication tables allow that time to reinforce classroom learning without additional preparation burden for teachers.

MELBOURNE, Australia — 06 October 2026 — EduMarking, a national supplier of playground and outdoor services to Australian schools, has released a free Playground Lesson Plan Guide for primary school teachers, showing how installed playground markings can be used to deliver Australian Curriculum literacy and numeracy outcomes during recess and lunch without additional class time or teacher supervision.

EduMarking has installed curriculum playground markings across schools in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, and Western Australia, including maths grids, number trails, alphabet paths, multiplication tables, and world maps. The markings are heat-bonded thermoplastic designs that require no technology and no dedicated lesson time to function. Students interact with curriculum content independently during breaks. The guide translates those installations into structured lesson frameworks teachers can reference, covering Foundation to Year 6 numeracy and literacy outcomes from the Australian Curriculum.

The release of the guide reflects a shift in how EduMarking is being engaged by schools. Principals and facilities managers have historically driven purchasing decisions for playground markings. The company has seen a growing proportion of enquiries originating from classroom teachers and curriculum coordinators, who are looking for outdoor spaces that can be used to consolidate concepts introduced in class without adding to an already pressured timetable.

The evidence base for this approach is building. A November 2025 study published by NSW researchers (Harper et al., 2025) found that two hours per week of outdoor play-based activity in Year 1 classrooms produced no negative impact on literacy or numeracy outcomes, countering the most common concern teachers raise against outdoor learning time. The AIHW physical activity data links regular physical activity to improvements in student concentration, behaviour, and academic results. EduMarking's position is that the playground is already where students spend 30 to 40% of their school day during breaks. The question is whether the surface is working.

"The schools seeing the best results from our installations are the ones where teachers know how to use what's there. A number grid is not just a game. It is a resource for skip counting, for exploring prime numbers, for visualising place value. An alphabet trail supports letter recognition and word-building in a way that does not feel like sitting at a desk. The Playground Lesson Plan Guide gives teachers a framework to connect what is on the ground to what is in their curriculum planner, without it becoming another thing they have to prepare from scratch," said Sally Reiter, Sales Manager of EduMarking.

The guide is available as a free download from EduMarking's website. It covers twelve lesson frameworks across literacy and numeracy, each tied to specific Australian Curriculum content descriptors for Foundation to Year 6, and designed to be completed in a standard recess or lunch period with minimal teacher facilitation.

Finding and fixing errors is not ‘wage theft’

AHEIA corrects the record on university underpayments The Australian Higher Education Industrial Association (AHEIA) says universities are united in finding, repaying and preventing staff underpayments, and rejects recent media claims that Australian universities are engaged in “wage theft”. AHEIA says this reporting does not reflect the findings of the Senate inquiry into wage theft, or the public record of the Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO). “Underpayments are serious, and universities treat them that way. But words matter. Wage theft is a criminal offence, and under Australian law it requires intentional conduct,” AHEIA Executive Director Craig Laughton said. “There is a material…
