Direct flights between Newcastle and Hobart return today, giving Hunter travellers more opportunity to explore Tasmania and bringing thousands more seats between the two regions over an extended summer season.
The Jetstar service will operate three times a week between Newcastle and Hobart until 24 April 2027, with flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
This year’s extended season will deliver 156 flights and 28,872 seats, an increase of 34 flights and almost 6,300 seats compared with last season. That represents almost 30 per cent growth year on year.
The direct two-hour flight puts Hobart’s renowned food and wine, waterfront, culture and events within easy reach of Hunter travellers, while opening the door for more Tasmanians to experience Newcastle and the wider Hunter region.
Newcastle Airport CEO Linc Horton said the return of the service was another important step in providing the region with greater choice and connectivity.
“It’s great to have Hobart back on the departures board and even better to see the season extended this year,” Mr Horton said. “For people across the Hunter, it means you can leave Newcastle and be in Hobart in around two hours, ready to enjoy everything Tasmania has to offer without travelling to Sydney first.”
“This connection works both ways. It also makes it easier for Tasmanians to come directly to Newcastle and experience our beaches, vineyards, events and everything the Hunter has to offer.”
Mr Horton said supporting direct services from Newcastle played an important role in building the region’s aviation network.
“The more people across our region choose to fly from Newcastle, the stronger the case we can make to airlines for more destinations, greater frequency and more choice in the future.”
To celebrate today’s first departure, passengers will get A Taste of What’s Waiting, with Tasmanian sparkling wine, cheese and produce at the gate before boarding the 3.40pm flight to Hobart.
The extended season runs across spring and summer and through major travel periods including Christmas, the Sydney to Hobart yacht race and Easter.
Flights depart Newcastle for Hobart at 3.40pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, arriving at 5.40pm. Return flights depart Hobart at 6.20pm and arrive in Newcastle at 8.15pm.
